How to Fillet a Bass

in dtube •  7 years ago  (edited)

The weather has been fantastic the past little while and that means we are getting out on the lake often. With the kids home from camp we are out there even more as they just can’t get enough of catching fist. The best part about fishing where we fish is that the water is full of panfish. This means that you can pretty much catch a Sunfish, Bluegill or Crappie every single time you put hook in the water with a worm. To be honest, they can be a bit of a pain in the butt because they will often hit your lure or hook before the bigger fish have a chance to strike. This is great for taking the kids fishing because it makes it fun and they don’t have to wait around long to catch something.

On Friday morning my daughter’s wanted to go fishing yet again and so we set out to find a big one. Well, a big one is what we got. My oldest daughter was dropping a simple hook with a worm on for bait and catching lots of the panfish that we catch all the time. All of a sudden she go a huge hit of her line and she was thrust into battle with a big fish. I watched for about 10 minutes as this 12 year old brought in an 18 inch 3 ¾ LB bass. I can tell you that the excitement was at a high as we got a glimpse of this beautiful fish as it came up and jumped out of the water and put on a show for us.

Having a bass that size provided the perfect opportunity to make this video about how to fillet a bass. Ever since my first fishing video people have been asking me to show how to fillet different fish so here is the first one. I hope you learn something and enjoy.

Good tutorial my friend... well done!

Thanks!!!

That's a big fish, I bet your daughter was really proud to have landed that one on her own.

Great job on the fillet, you make it look way to easy I'm pretty sure it has to be alot more harder unless you are well practiced.

Thanks for the nice comment. She was super excited. This kid has a knack for catching big fish. She has cought several large ones.

It takes a little practice for sure. I butchered a few fillets as I was learning to do his. Practice makes perfect.

Absolutely fantastic the way you cut into that bass with such finesse, very informative, I just learned something new, thank you for sharing this video!

Thank you for the compliment. I have had lots of practice. I can assure you it wasn’t always so pretty. Lol.

Great job! You are a great father. You can even start to teach cooking in school. I guess these are skills that you develop before you become a teacher. Now you are putting all your past skills into good use by putting them on dtube. You are getting great dtuve upvote as well! Congrats!

Thanks, o an enjoyjbg he videos and am planning more in the future. Once I get comfortable o will be putting some fun educational content on video.

The heart of the father and the quality time you spent with your daughter are memories that will last even in their adulthood. The sharing on how to fillet different fish is really a good reference. When I ever need to fillet a fish, I know where to find a video to do it. Thanks for sharing!

The best part is that my daughter wants to fillet the fish too. She has been learning from me and wants to clean the next one .

Wow, thanks for the video! Very informative. You're a great role model to your kids

Thanks!! The videos are fun and my kids love to fish!! Such a lucky father I am!

This is perfect! I'll show my husband hahaha... I can cook it but I don't like prepping it. Great instructions! I'll keep it in mind next time we catch something.

I’m so glad you liked it. Most common fish can be prepped similarly. Pike is very different and I will do a video on that soon. Actually, I did one two weeks ago and it got accidentally deleted. Lol a Dtube noob mistake by me.

I've always wanted to know how to fillet a fish. Thanks for the info broncofan99. Not too hard! Cheers!

Glad you enjoyed. A little practice and you will be all over it.

Glad you enjoyed. A

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

I like grilled bass, but for that lucky catch fillet is great.

Grilling these fillets would be perfect. I would leave the skin on if I was doing that though. These ones will be pan fried. Yum!

This turned out great! :) So did you filet it without cleaning it? If so that is awesome! haha You got skills my friend!

Yup, cleaned without gutting it. You could scale it, gut it and take the head off and the do it grilled. Then you have to deal with bones, not fun for the kids. I sometimes will leave the skin on the fillet and grill them that way as well but these are being pan fried. Tasty.

That is awesome. :) Yeah bones are not fun. You could probably cook this on a cedar plank. Have you ever tried that process?

Cedar plank is amazing. I love salmon done on cedar plank on the bbq

oh yeah cedar plank salmon on the BBQ! Have you tried the same with your bass filet? Or will it not work the same way as the salmon?

Wow. First off, Nice Fishy. That makes me excited, I'll bet your daughter was out of her mind.

Then a great video. That's some seriously good instruction on a process that is pretty easy once you know how. You did a really good job with the 'know how' part.

I don't think I've ever switched knives in the process. I'd have started with the big one and run the whole job. Very nice idea.

My favorite pan fish has always been perch. We'd catch a bucket full every now and again so I built a fillet board with nails pointing up to hold the tail. Using an electric knife I could fillet a perch in less than a minute :) And they taste soooo good.

Thanks Bronco. A terrific video for a terrific fish.

Dude, we absolutely love perch. We catch them here in our river but not a lot of big ones. I think they have a hard time surviving to large size with all the Pike in the river. She was super excited about the fish although she has caught several big ones. She caught an almost 5 LB'er two summers ago. She has a knack for this fishing thing. haha I don't always switch knives but my smaller knife was sharper and with the curve being put on I didn't want to come short when coming under the fillet.

Great how to. I would clean them if I had to, but I'd rather cook them. Actually I'd rather catch them if I got to choose which step :)

Catching is certainly the fun part. Don't forget the best part though... Eating!!! LOL
