Honest Embers – The Best Music Videos in Ukrainian Metal in 2018
Hi everyone! Its Honest Embers and today we are looking at the best Ukrainian metal music videos of the passing year. A little disclaimer: to this list I didnt include any live performances or music videos like «the band is playing in the center of the room and a girl is wandering around». I mean, I really wanted to take only those artworks, which represent the artistic value and reflect all the efforts invested in it. Also, you wont see here any metalcore etc., just for the sake of making this list shorter and more orthodoxal. So, lets get started.

1. Morton and «Horror of Daniel Wagner»
   Fully animated and stylized video, which immerse you into the gloomy, philosophical atmosphere of the song. To my mind, in this 8-minute track the band was determined to show their best. Great song, great video. It is obvious that the creator put her heart in it. For me, the only downside is that the story`s hard to follow. At times you may find yourself fixated. It feels like you’ve been watching the Maze Screensaver for Windows 98 (startuppers will see what I mean).

2. Jinjer – Ape
   Frankly speaking, I had some doubts about this one, because it meets the definition of the «band playing in a room». It`s not their best track and clearly not the best music video. But, considering their rough touring schedule, I wonder how this guys manage to write new songs. Also, it would be inappropriate to just pass by the work of the top Ukrainian performers. It definitely deserves attention at least for yet another awesome look of the lead singer and the ability to turn an ordinary music video to a piece of art.

3. From animated videos to green screen. Detach – Supernova. Although I am not a big fan of computer graphics, I must admit, that this video is one of the best of this year, and that is why its being mentioned here. A decent song, the style of the video perfectly suits the track itself and the overall album. Particular attention should be given to vocalists profound acting skills. Strong and stylish, this video had been made not in a day, and that is the reason for it being in this list.

4. Chasing Embers - Silent House
   I am not going to praise my own bands song too much. Instead, Id rather share some insider information with you. Overall, it took almost 70 people to create this music video. We were shooting outside the city. Production designer and her crew managed to set up a very authentic location and some extraordinary looks for the group members. 14 hours of work without any breaks whatsoever. We end up with fresh, nontrivial music video with some gloomy post apocalyptic atmosphere accompanied by the unconventional track. In my opinion, it turned out to be quite dynamic and coherent. .

5. Velikhan – Hero
   I would say this is the most hilarious and extraordinary music video of this year. It`s a good example of some quality nonsense. Charismatic vocalist, good special effects, nice humor and quite catchy song. Velikhan – Hero.

6. Chumatskyi Shliakh – Lamai (ukr.: Чумацький Шлях – Ламай)
   The classical rock music video with lots of cliché. But, maybe, it is that foolproof formula which gives it some unbelievable drive. Not to mention, that the video definitely has some seriousness and brutality to it. Even without a clear plot, it makes you watch it till the end every time. The speed, the flamethrower, the car explosion and the killer song – that is Chumatskyi Shliakh – Lamai.

7. Ignea – Queen Dies
   Well, here we have a clear storyline and a very uncommon take on the music video production. It combines the real footage and animation. By the way, this video has the same creator as the Morton`s «Horror of Daniel Wagner» mentioned above. Ignea tells us a fascinating story through the partially animated video. And all this accompanied by a great metal track. It is an awesome example of a video sequence becoming one single entity with the music.

I intentionally didn`t make a top list out of it, simply because each of this music videos is unique in its own way and they are very different from one another. Comparison is not applicable in this case. None of them are to be ashamed of, and I am incredibly glad that musicians in our country begin to make some real-deal stuff! Keep it up!
