How To Handicap Your Golf Event
How To Handicap Your Golf Event | Every Person Planning A Golf Event Wants To Know

The Rules of Golf Handicapping.
You have probably heard some golf terminology such as the standard scramble, Peoria or Scheid system, or maybe even the Stableford. But having a golf handicap system is not enough.golf lady
Organizing a golf event takes courage! We assume that we will have perfect weather, good sportsmanship and an excellent support staff of volunteers. Not to mention the awards ceremony and dinner banquet. Make sure that the event is catered for all skill levels.

So how can you plan your own golf tournament without hiring an event planner. Spoiler alert! I wouldn’t do it. If you want to save a lot of money, then we suggest doing much of the leg work before the event. You can hire a golf event planner for a full-service, or for specific planning of events. For example, some companies hire a golf event planner for planning the ceremony and dinner, while others include the difficult registration process.

Whatever you decide, find a planner that is a great communicator and can bring their vast experience to your event and make it memorable…in a good way. We recommend Extra Touch Events, and they can be reached at (503) 757-7121 or www.extratouchevents.com.

We will include other posts that include where to start when setting up a golf tournament (budget, team selection, objective of tournament. Is the tournament to network, team building, a day off relaxing, fundraising, entertainment, competition, or something else?).

Support Team Collects Player Information
Before you plan the tournament, your support team needs to decide what information that your company should collect. If your event is going to invite new potential clients or leads, then you will want additional information than if your event was only for your company entertainment. You may want to ask the golf course and find out if they require any specific details while playing on their course.golf swing
Make sure that the registration process is extremely simple. Supply the support staff at check in with a cheat sheet with timelines, VIP list, cost of buying mulligans, how the handicaps will work, start time of event, map of golf course, location of bathrooms or anything else that the attendees may need. Common information that is collected is: NAME | ADDRESS | PHONE/EMAIL | HANDICAP | CLOTHING SIZE FOR AWARDS | MEAL PREFERENCES

You may want to provide dinner options a few weeks prior to the golf event (depending on your caterer), or you may want to get specific information for a raffle or prize that is rewarded at the awards ceremony. If your event is catered to executives, you may also ask drink choices or other catering desires.

The golf carts will be filled with information from the golf course, advertising from vendors or your own company, time reminders (dinner), prizes or giveaways (company shirt), tickets for treats and drinks along the course for redemption.

Promote. Promote. Promote the event! Emails, phone calls, snail mail, post its, flyers, and your website.

Golf Formats
There are many golf formats to use in your tournament that can be used with small or large events, beginners or skilled. Below is a list of formats.

Calculating The Golf Handicap
Peoria or Scheid System
Selecting the Peoria or Scheid system takes more time for the event planners at the end of the tournament to calculate scorecards. This system is often selected when most of the attendees do not have high handicaps. GOLF ball

There is a system called the Modified Peoria that works better for golf tournaments because the scoring is less time intensive. Your committee will select a par 3, par 5, and four par 4 holes from an 18-hole course. The par-4 holes should include 2 from the front nine and 2 from the back nine.

The handicap is determined by calculating the teams strokes over par on the six selected holes, and then multiplying that number by 2.8. This will be the number that is deducted from the gross score. Please note, a maximum of three over par should be used on the par 3 and 4 holes, while a maximum of four over can be used for the par 5 hole.

Calculating Handicap Score:

Team score is 74, with a score of 2 over on the six selected holes.

2 x 2.8 = 5.6 for a net score of 68

If you can obtain handicaps from the players prior to the event, the 50 percent method works quite well.

50 Percent Method
Add all players handicaps together for a given team. Divide the team’s total handicap number by twice the number of players.

Calculating Team Handicap:

Handicaps of 2, 4, 14, 18 for a team total of 38.

38 ÷ 8 = a team handicap of 4.75

Subtract the handicap number from the team’s gross score at the end of the event to determine the team’s net score.
