Business is business, but hell, good content is primarily not aimed at good rewards, but at consumption by the target audience! Everyone is on about rewards (me too, in a sense, I must admit!), but aren't we losing sight of the ultimate objective, namely a community benefitting by sharing valuable knowledge and insights, so elevating quality of life?
We have to eat yes, and survival is particularly difficult for authors coming with nothing but a wealth of valuable experience and wisdom to share, knowledge sometimes gained under difficult circumstances - so at least a minimum income is important for the sake of keeping such contributors productive, but I can bet my bottom dollar that getting their messages across is often more important than alleviating their own circumstances.
Wouldn't a scheme directly generating rewards for getting authors more avid followers make sense in this regard?
Really it comes down to the fact you can earn 4x the amount of Steem then any other method. Regardless of what the point of Steem is, if we want to see the currency used to find great content, what PoB was invented for, then we need to somehow reduce the gap between selling votes and curating. It's really that simple, most people will continue to sell votes or self upvote (even if they dont want to create content, some will put out a few lines just to selfupvote because its the best ROI) - Ecosystems run on incentives, if you make one thing lopsided, it strangles the rest of the system.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

I cannot get myself to use upvoting bots, or to selfupvote - it simply does not gel with me. If I have ever done that, it was by accident. Quality posts and quality curations are all that really make sense to me and I am grateful for any moves making those the more viable options.
