Massive Gear Haul for Vloggers // I Just Spent $1700 to Improve My Video Content 😱

in dtube β€’Β  5 years agoΒ

Hi Friends!

I'm creeping up on the two year mark of making content, and I finally took the plunge and upgraded from my iPhone! I spent countless hours researching the best camera and video equipment for vloggers and felt super overwhelmed at the MANY options available. I got some tips and advice from various video creators and think I have landed on the perfect setup for what I wanted. I just got everything in the mail today and thought I'd film a gear haul video to show you the setup I decided on and why I went with each item!

Here are the things that were most important to me when it came to updating my equipment:

  • A lightweight camera body so it would be easy for travel.
  • A flip screen so when i'm out and about filming, I can make sure that I'm in frame and in focus.
  • The option for interchangeable lenses so I can grow with the camera and experiment with different looks and styles.
  • A camera that is great for both photos and video.
  • A mic jack so that I can get optimal audio. It literally blows my mind how many camera's don't have this!

Finding a camera that had all of these features was harder than I thought when you start digging into the many options available.

Most people would probably recommend getting the basics first and then expanding from there... but I decided to do things completely opposite! I figure that since I have never done much in terms of upgrading, and while I was already going to be in the mode of learning new things - that I just wanted to go all in and get all the accessories I think I need for an optimal setup. I did a ton of research and made a few decisions like getting an extra lens right out of the gate, and going for the more expensive microphone. The total bill was a rough pill to swallow - but I feel stoked to be able to bring my A-game.

While I was upgrading my camera situation - I decided to invest in two other areas of content creation as well. So far, I've just been editing my videos on Imovie, but I've decided to make the investment in Final Cut Pro so that I can start slicing and dicing more professional looking videos to match my new and improved footage!

I also recognize that there will be times I still want to use my phone to make content - and so I upgraded the microphone I use for that. I was actually introduced to this little Rode mic for Iphone's in Austin from Irina Litchfield! I noticed it on her phone and immediately asked her about it. It's an inexpensive and great little mic! I've been testing it out today and am super impressed.

In the video I go into a lot more detail of each item - but here's a quick snapshot of what I got! Follow the links under each photo if you want to check out the item on Amazon.

I hope you guys enjoyed this gear haul video! I can't wait to start using my new equipment and start incorporating it into my content. I'm still a little intimidated by this fancy camera - but it will just take a little trial and error to figure it all out. I may share some gear review videos of my new equipment vs. the Iphone, some audio tests with and without the wind screen and all sorts of fun things like that. If there are any particular videos you guys are interested in seeing - let me know in the comments below!

I just booked a Europe vacation with the family and it has made us think about getting a camera to capture some great moments. However, still undecided as the i phone goes a long way for certain!

It's such a tough choice!! I went back and forth so many times if I wanted to upgrade or not. You'll definitely get some richer, deeper looking photos with a camera - but your phone will also take totally awesome shots!

First of all, nice gear upgrade πŸ˜ƒ

Secondly, unless you're running your own IPFS servers to host your own videos, DTube's servers are going to struggle to play your 4K videos to your viewers (and you will have upload issues of those high-resolution videos too). Not only that, they delete videos that you put a lot of effort into making them approximately after 2 months.

Here at @onelovedtube, we offer paid hosting services through our easy to use alternative uploader and our Discord pinning bot. The uploader is available at https://uploader.oneloved.tube.

If you want to spin up your own IPFS node to get your videos hosted so that they remain playable indefinitely, feel free to contact me on Discord (techcoderx#7481) as I'm happy to help anyone to get their own node running. πŸ˜‰

Thanks @techoderx!! For uploading to Dtube - I'll probably use Handbrake to downgrade the video quality a bit so it is more playable.

I've thought about doing the Dtube hosting thing with you guys. I've chatted with @d00k13 a few times about it. How much does it cost again? Is it by video or a monthly flat charge?

Our hosting service starts at $10/month flat rate. For the uploader - instead of 10%, the beneficiary rate to @dtube is 2%.

I have the same camera, you will totally love it! :))

Oh that's awesome!! Glad to hear you love your's! I'm still just barely digging into playing with it - but I'm pretty excited by the possibilities. πŸ˜ƒ

Which lenses do you like using with it? Or do you mainly use the kit 15-45mm lens?

Yes, and I find they work just fine for my vlogs. In the future I will consider experimenting with other types of lens :)

Cool! Thanks for the reply. Your vlogs always look so good so that's great to hear it's from that lens! πŸ˜ƒ

Enjoy your new adventure :)

The canon M50 I a great all rounder, it’s the cam I went with too. I love it so much. The only thing is , I find myself using my iPhone a lot still as I can edit on the go easily without having a laptop but once I have the time I use the M50, I need one of those Rode mics. Good investments.

Do a video on time vs quality regarding the iPhone and Pro camera

Ooh cool that you own it too!! That's a great idea for a video topic. When researching this camera, a few reviewers mentioned that there was a Canon app you can use to automatically send photos you take to your phone. Have you tried that out? I haven't dug into figuring that out yet - but I thought that sounded like an awesome feature and could really help solve the time problem.

Nice looking gear. Looking forward to more updates as you put it to use :)

Thanks Brad!! Looking forward to finally diving into the world of better gear! 😬

Ohoo this is exciting! Now we have very high expectations for you upcoming videos 😏

So much pressure! πŸ˜… haha I'm just going to slowly integrate as I get used to using the various pieces!

Haha, no worries! I'll keep an eye on the quality to see if I notice ;)

You know there is out 1000 GB SD memory cart πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘Œ when steem up, I try get this. 😁

Great haul, the Canon m50 with a decent lens for vlogging is one of the best camera bodies going for vlogging right now in my opinion.
