What is your opinion of dtube? I checked into it a couple of weeks ago but was a little confused. Do I understand it correctly that you have to pay to host vids? What is the value of that over a free service like YouTube, freedom from censorship? I'd like to know your thoughts.

Hi, @moeknows.

I'm just beginning to become familiar with DTube. I think it is a great start.

My understanding of the "financial" side is that 25% of the payout from the post goes to @heimindanger, the creator of DTube. Then 10% of that 25% is put on account with the IPFS file host to pay for the initial storage charges of the video.

I feel that those charges are quite low... Here's a quote from the first article explaining the system:

"The rate is $0.044 per GB per month. So, for example, let's say you upload a 100MB video, that earns $10 rewards, then $0.25 will go to @nannal and ensure data redundancy for ~57 months. Once this time is passed, users will need to either pay themselves (crypto accepted of course) to keep the files being seeded, or seed it themselves directly on their own PC and connection."

So, $0.25 covers the costs for almost five years? And it comes right out of the payout? Cool!

Of course, if your video doesn't pay much, the time would be less. So, just re-post it later?

I'd suggest you read @heimindanger's original article here. He talks about future improvements that would completely eliminate this issue, and I suspect they will be made as time goes on.

Looking into this yesterday in order to use DTube for the first time opened my eyes to IPFS, which I had not heard of before, and which I think has amazing possibilities...

Thanks for the reply. Some of it goes over my head. I consider myself tech savvy, but not so much on the development side of things.

Question, why wouldn't you just use youtube?

I like trying new things; I want to support all forms of distributed systems, tools and means that take power out of the hands of central governments and restore it to people. I also prefer channels that are not subject to censorship.

I feel you. I'm the same way. Plus there's something to be said for being an early adopter of technology. I just like to know all the parameters. It's a reasonable service.

not sure what I expected, which at first was nothing b/c my sound was turned down b/c of @randowhale's app that pops up with an annoying sound - he needs to work out a few bugs there...So, I got sound on your vid, but no vid - Is that correct, or am I missing something? Just sound, no action? Maybe I don't get the purpose of this compared to Youtube. Maybe it's me LOL!!

Wow, I'm excited to see that you've achieved Rep 70! Congratulations! :) :D

OK, so, DTube is perhaps "not quite ready for prime time."

What I've seen is that it works in some browsers but not others. So far, I've only seen it work in Safari, which I found pretty surprising because overall I'm not too happy with Safari.

It did not work in Chrome or Brave or Firefox. I haven't yet tried Internet Explorer.

HOWEVER, in those other browsers it seems that you CAN at least download the MP4 file one way or another.

Please let me know what you find after this additional news? Thanks!

Thanks, creatr. You're right - I have a Mac but don't use Safari - UGH! I use Chrome - much faster. Good explanation, but right now I don't feel like working that hard when Youtube is a click away...unless, of course, there's gold in that darn box lol

As you already know, one of my driving motivations is to get everything possible out of the hands of "the beast." One of the ways I work towards that is trying to learn about and use all possible "distributed" resources. And so I want to begin to learn about and use DTube and DSound.

And, yes, ultimately I think there is gelt to be had by transferring human capital back to the humans who generate it... ;)

I know, creatr, I was just puzzled by the limitations of the app, but I know your reasons for seeking these resources. I constantly explore new technology and when I find something that makes my life easier, I feel content
