You can't reason with these hard-core Trumpists David, Trump told them he'd only hire the "best and brightest" people, so when, like this guy, they royally screw up they don't see what any sane person see's an under-qualified, out of his league person....they see "their man", it doesn't matter that he is a moron, he's their guy.
Any sane democrat or moderate republican doesn't want to place "Cleetus" into an important position irrespective if he/she is on their team, they want capable people, whereas Trumpists would be happy to have Alex Jones on the supreme court and Hannity as their doctor.

I would like to point out that Trump didnt nominate this guy personally. Someone in the White House did it that works for Trump. Trump actually called and thanked the committee for questioning this guy and pointing out his unqualified nature. He thanked them for not allowing this guy to just skate through unnoticed
