On the ground we have a once dominant pioneer tree, known locally as Arbol Loco. Its central trunk can mature into very hard wood, although currently we use much of this round wood we find around the farm in landscaping uses along paths or garden beds.
Another nearby tree, a common pioneer called Cecropia Peltata, is loved by tucans and other birds for its fleshy fruit, seed and tall branches for perching. Although it is on the list of the (100 most invasive foreign species in the world)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecropia_peltata], here it is a native pioneer and all around useful plant. The trunk wood is great firewood.
In an Agroforestry system, pruning becomes a main job. Especially in the tropics, the growth and vitality of a healthy young forest is impressive, and we continue to develop strategies that make this an advantage for us!
We continue to improve the organization of the area and the paths throughout - and we will keep taking pictures and videos and documenting our process!
