Acoustic brutal death metal cover of Broken Hope's song "Gorehog" from their debut album "Swamped In Gore" (1991). I chose this song because of its killer slow riff - one of my most favorite riffs in the whole genre of death metal. The other reason was because this song was pretty easy to play and it’s also short. This music video was like a test for me - the first acoustic death metal music video I ever made for that time, so I wanted to start with something simple and see how it would work.
Interestingly, the album “Swamped in Gore” was the first death metal album in the history that was recorded entirely in digital form instead of using analog tape. Yet, it wasn’t commercially successful for Broken Hope (at least right after its initial release by Grindcore International, because later it was reissued by Metal Blade Records), but it made them noticed and signed by Metal Blade Records. In fact, this is one of my most favorite death metal albums, and I think it stays the heaviest and simply the best among the all discography of Broken Hope. Just listen to the sound of that snare drum in the intro - it’s like a thunder! The guitar tones, and of course the powerful extremely low growling vocals of one of the most brutal singers in death metal - Joe Ptacek - make the album a masterpiece of brutal death / grindcore music.
As I usually do with cover songs, I tried to contribute some changes to the music. I added harmony during that tremolo picking part before the slow riff, instead of just playing both guitar parts identically. The same is while playing all other riffs, but in a smaller amount.
I doubt if you can hear the lyrics through growling, but the song itself is about a wild boar (hog) who is very wicked, dangerous and tends to be impolite with humans.
