Acoustic Burzum - Beholding The Daughters Of The Firmament, from "Filosofem" (cover by Gene Willow)

My acoustic black metal cover version of Burzum's song "Beholding The Daughters Of The Firmament" / "Erblicket die Töchter des Firmament" from the album "Filosofem", 1996.

This song is my most favorite of all that Varg Vikernes has ever written. I was wondering what this weird title meant, until I watched Varg’s video where he explains everything about the title and the lyrics of the song. You can watch it on his official channel to learn more:

My guitar seems to be out of tune, but I actually tried my best to tune it before the recording. This is the best result I could achieve with the old strings that had been changed the last time three or four years before I filmed this video. Also, the frets on the guitar are worn out, which also contributes to the detuning. But if I need to justify myself, I can also add that it’s black metal, and moreover Burzum, which has little to do with high quality, so let’s assume I just naturally followed the best traditions of the genre.

I also realized that I’m playing the main riff incorrectly. I’m playing “3-3-2-3-0000…”, while in the original version Varg plays “3-2-2-3-0000…”. And I like the way it’s played in the original version better. I think I saw this mistake in some guitar pro tab and just copied it, so shame on me, as this riff is pretty simple.

I also had an idea to record it in a better quality, like I record my other acoustic metal songs - with the bass part, two guitar tracks in the left and right channels, and vocals, but I had a problem with coming up with the way I would sing it. Growling and bellowing, like I usually do, wouldn’t really work with this kind of song, and I can’t imagine how to sing it with clean vocals either. So I just decided to play it as an instrumental, in one take. Maybe I will get back to it someday, but I can not promise.

The whole album Filosofem takes a special place in my heart because of its cold and sad mood. This is funny that Varg himself seems to have never been a depressive person, but his music makes an impression that its author lives in an ongoing emotional suffering.
