History & Etymology
Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler coined the term autism in 1910 by combining the latin root auto, meaning the self, and the suffix -ism denoting a particular aspect or characteristic. This combination puts a focus on the introversion, and social aspects of autism. It was originally coined as a way to describe various symptoms of schizophrenia.
1938 was the first time the word was used in its modern sense when Hans Asperger adopted Bleuler’s word in a lecture he gave about child psychology. Because the word Autism was closely related to schizophrenia there was much confusion around the condition, and it wasn’t until the late 1960s when Autism was established as a separate syndrome.
