Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Continuing from Genesis 5:30 into 6:2
The reading from today goes from one chapter to another, but the Tanakh never had chapter an verse in the beginning. They just titled the each page with the last words of the previous page. Books were simply titled with the first word of the first page of that book; B'reshit, v'yikrah, etc.
I read verse thirty again and we finished the chapter, and it breaks the rhythm of all others by naming the three children that Noah had.
Shem means Name
Ham means Hot (or warm)
Yephet means Wide open, spacious or (morally) open minded - loose.
Right after they were born, we hear how the population had grown across the land. Lots of beautiful women were being noticed by "the sons of God" who took them as wives. Were these various ranks of angels (malekim)? We know angels can bee seen when they want to be seen. Were they other beings?
I will not define them as one thing or another.
They were not the Giants (Nephelim) - those were the result of these mixed marriages.
