The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 6, DTube Video #2

in dtube •  6 years ago  (edited)

A review video of sorts at the beginning.

For starters, I sort through the dots and dashes before reading the Hebrew today. I hope that my explanation in the beginning will help clear up what is a vowel, and what is not.

For more information on the dots inside of letters, see what a dagesh is here. Cantillation is for notation and its study would require choosing which system is employed, then many books related to your chosen system. The word is easily searched if you would like an exhaustive study. That is not my goal. Mine is a basic reading and understanding study.

Today I show you a simple chart and point out the vowels.
I point out the dot on the left for sin and the dot on the right for shin.
I point out the dagesh marks and explain a few of them.
Other markings are cantillation, anything that is not on the vowel chart, and we will not deal with those for now. Details on them are for future lessons.

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Continuing with Genesis 6:6-10

Our passage today shows that God's heart is grieved, and He decides to erase all He has created. Empathizing with The Father, I wonder what it would take for me to regret having my children and want to wipe them out. It would probably be something they had done that made them inhuman. Something that caused them to treat each other in an inhumane way. Reading of wars, drugs and slavery of children in the news tells me that we have arrived. "For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark."

Who was on earth back then? What were they doing? Non-human, fallen beings came from the heavens and corrupted the gene pool. Then they taught the humans to practice all sorts of, lets say, magic arts and inhumanity. So, God found a man who was pure in his generation. His mother had not slept with a non-human, and Noah had not learned what is forbidden or practiced it. He was blameless.

Style

Some talk about the creation story, how God created everything, rested, and then later describes creating things again. That is in the first two chaptters of Genesis. That kind of thinking does not work. Hebrew writing style gives us the big picture first. Then we get details plugged into what was initially laid out.

Two weeks ago we saw that Noah fathered Shem, Ham and Japeth, and today we see that he had three more kids and also named them Shem, Ham and Japeth. Did he have three boys or six? Obviously there were only three. The writer simply brings more details of what was happening on earth as Noah was going through the process of caring for his children as each one arrived.

Is it logical to conclude that the Creator would lay down some broad strokes on the canvas, then extrapolate details about each in the foreground and background? That is exactly how things are presented in Hebrew texts. If you do not take the time to understand the language and culture in which things are written, you may think that someone named Noah had a set of three, then had another set and named them similarly.

All of the above plus more observations are covered in today's video. Here are the verses we will be concentrating on

There are two mistakes while reading the Hebrew text: one I corrected, the other was rey-mes, for creeping things, that word reminds me of spiders and I hate spiders. I think you all know that I am not able to manipulate videos as some do. I get them all in one shot or do them over.

HaShem

There are many opinions and even traditions telling us not to pronounce The Name, other psalms and prophecies that tell us we will call on His Name, some saying we must call upon His Name to be saved. There are also debates on the letter vav and how it is pronounced. Is it like a W or like a V?

I will not attempt to resolve the pronunciation debate here. When I started reading and posting on DTube, a fellow steemian offered to read a passage fluently, giving me permission to post it. It can be found on dsound.audio, containing a very fluent, clearly heard, reading of The Name as "Yehovah" even though there is a missing vowel. As far as I know, this person does not attend Synagogue but I do know he is a native born of Israeli.

If you are just starting, my lessons are all here starting at Alef, adding vowels (the dots and lines) as we go, the sofit formations and numerical values. Just go to my blog and scroll to the bottom or click here
