When you first jump in it's uncomfortable. It's cold. That's the obvious. But you are a human. Well that's obvious too. But you are bigger than that cold water. Remember to breath deeply. Focus on something other than the cold even though it is very hard to do in the beginning. Pray, talk to yourself, sing, laugh or do anything that helps to focus on something else if you have to.
If you can't focus on anything else except for the cold water then embrace it. Stand there freezing your butt off. Learn to be uncomfortable. Train your mind to get over the discomfort and trust me the more you do this it will become much easier.
Enjoy the benefits of putting your body through this uncomfortable situation. It's just a small test in comparison to what life brings at times.

What you focus on and how you focus on it is very important.in my own experience, I felt legitimate fear each morning before I forced myself to take a dip into my chilly shower prison.
There wasn’t a single time when I didn’t have to spend a few minutes psyching myself up before doing it.
But I kept doing it, because I felt like it would be good for me.
How many of you can say that you work through fear or being uncomfortable in order to ultimately benefit your life?
Even I have to admit that if I did that more often my life would look completely differently. My brain trying to keep me alive all the time and generating the feeling of fear is one of the biggest barriers to my success.

Your brain will always create the worst possible scenarios in your head when you’re considering doing something new, difficult, or potentially dangerous.
It does this to help keep you alive. Not fulfilled, or even happy.

There is a saying that goes which i like so much:
What we fear doing most, is usually what we need to do the most.
I love that because even though taking a cold shower isn’t my biggest fear (failure is), it represents the fear that we face in every day life.
As much as I thought I would hate it and as bad as I thought it would be each time, my body always adapted. I was fine after a few minutes and even got used to it towards the end.
The first minute or two of the shower was awful. My body was shaking, tense, and in a little bit of shock. My first instincts were to get out of the situation.
But as I stood under the water longer, I gained clarity. My mind realized that we weren’t dying and nothing was really wrong. I began to get myself to calm down, relax my body, and go on with my shower as normal.
Nothing is ever as bad as we think it’s going to be.
Even when things go horribly wrong, the situations aren’t permanent. We humans are surprisingly resilient and are capable of changing in various ways to rise out of great challenges.
We have the capability to become conscious of our motives, thoughts, and can ultimately decide what does or doesn’t happen. Or at the very least, how we respond to what has happened to us.
That’s why we’re always in control.
Always in control of what decisions we make, what we allow ourselves to feel, how we treat others, and what level of effort we put in.

You know that movie “Limitless” with Bradley Cooper, where he has just taken the pill for the first time and everything around him becomes 10x clearer?
Stepping into those cold showers each day felt exactly like that.
I was instantly wide awake every time. My senses and awareness of myself and my environment became much more heightened than they would have been on any typical morning.
My head felt clearer and even though I felt like I was going to die from hypothermia, I wasn’t in the usual pre coffee haze I tend to find myself in some mornings.
It has been proven that cold showers can increase alertness and I 100% agree, even though I only have anecdotal evidence (that’s all you need for a Medium article right?).
Also, I’ve got a bit of a bum knee. I don’t even know what’s wrong with it other than I played football and lifted a good amount of heavy things in high school. Combined with driving a manual car most of my life, it is usually stiff in the morning.
It could just be the placebo effect, but I swear that my knee felt better after those showers than it does most mornings. Throughout the day I felt like it had a better range of motion as well.
Taking these cold showers felt incredibly stimulating (not like that you sicko). I’m thinking that I should’ve listened to the athletic trainer and taken way more ice baths!

It's crazy that it's just water and it can help like it does.. For example it has been shown to improve your immune system. A couple of weeks ago almost everyone in my immediate family got sick. I was around my daughter and wife who both had the flu. I also kissed them and came in direct contact but somehow I avoided the flu.
The only explanation I can come up with is cold showers since it has been shown to vastly improve your chances of not getting sick. So idk. Maybe it doesn't work but I find it hard to believe that it at least doesn't have some positive impact on your health.

Interesting perspective on cold showers! I've had a few experiences with cold weather and water. I absolutely agree that pushing our limits is a good thing. I read about the real ice man just this year. But before that I had experiences of seeing a native Minnesotan stand out in the cold and not be effect by it like I was, wearing significantly less protection. I read a story once, about a man and his son. They where outside by a fire, and the son was shivering but the dad was not. The son asked the father how he could not be cold, and the father said it was because he accepted the cold and let it pass thru him. The son said what if he died? The father said he accepted that also, if that was what was to be, then so be it.
That story stuck with me. Learning to accept uncomfortable situations means you keep a clear head, and often it isn't as bad as you imagined.

This makes me think about how some homeless people have to sleep in the cold. I don't know how they do it but like you said they seem to have accepted the cold and are used to it. I think they are some of the toughest people on the planet.

Third day now of taking cold showers, I think I'm up to 30 seconds. I don't know whether to stand in the same position or move about in it yet, as long as water is on me. But it certainly does energize and I'm getting the breathing down, but yes I may sing myself a song soon.

I live in Baguio town Philippines. The water there's as bloodless as water inside the freezer. It makes me soar whenever I take a bathtub. I have no preference however to take every bit of those water

Cold water, it has made stay up to 5minutes in the bath room without pouring water on me but just talking something elseand trying encourage myself like i am in trouble kind of. And when yiu finally have the balls to oour it again, a nice and horrible scream follows like 'whoa!'
