Although it seems like a long time ago, a lot of that conditioning has stuck... hard. I manage a recreational cannabis dispensary in Colorado. Almost every customer is uncomfortable/paranoid on their first visit. On top of that, people are reluctant to buy the products they need because they still see it as a "gateway drug."
It was some strong propaganda from almost 100 years ago. It's still gonna take some time to shake it off. It will take a lot of people doing their part and spreading the word, like you did with this post. :) Thanks a lot.
