Current Book: The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason
"What Dost Thou to Increase Thy Capacity to Earn?" | Book Club: Lessons Learned #3
"The seventh cure for a lean purse: increase thy ability to earn” - The Richest Man in Babylon
“Preceding accomplishment must be desire. Thy desires must be strong and definite. [...] For a man to be rich is of little purpose. For a man to desire five pieces of gold is a tangible desire which he can press to fulfillment.”
Create goals and desires that are tangible, measurable, and on a specific timetable. A goal to get rich is not a productive one and is a goal that you’re unlikely to accomplish. Your desires for your goal must also be strong ones. You cannot simply want to achieve your goals in life. You must have a burning desire to accomplish the specific, measurable goals that you’re setting out to achieve.
Here’s an example of a proper goal: My income will increase 30% by the end of 2018.
Breaking it down:
- Notice that the goal is not worded in a passive way - I’m not saying that I want to or I hope to increase my income by 30%, I’m saying that I WILL increase my income by 30%
- The goal is measurable - a 30% increase from my current income. When it comes time to figure out whether or not I accomplished my goal, a simple yes or no answer will tell me whether or not I succeeded.
- The goal has a specific timetable - it must be accomplished by the end of 2018
Now that you know how to craft a proper goal, how can you "increase thy ability to earn?”
“As a man perfecteth himself in his calling even so doth his ability to earn increase.”
“The more of wisdom we know, the more we may earn. The man who seeks to learn more of his craft shall be richly rewarded.”
Arkad goes on to give his students some specific examples:
"If he is an artisan, he may seek to learn the methods and the tools of those most skillful in the same line. If he laboreth at the law or at healing, he may consult and exchange knowledge with others of his calling. If he be a merchant, he may continually seek better goods that can be purchased at lower prices.”
Notice that Arkad is simply telling his students to add more value to the world:
- An artisan who seeks to learn better methods and tools will be able to create better and more beautiful work for his or her patrons
- A lawyer or doctor who learns more about their practice will be able to better serve their clients and patients
- A merchant who can purchase goods at lower prices will be able to deliver more and better goods to his or her customers at cheaper prices
Arkad is also explaining to his students to not be afraid to ask for help. An artisan who wishes to increase their ability to earn should learn from “those most skillful in the same line.” A lawyer or doctor “may consult and exchange knowledge with others of his calling.” A merchant may recruit other merchants to join him on his quest to “seek better goods that can be purchased at lower prices.”
Thus, the key to increasing your ability to earn is to increase the value you give back to the world. If you don't know how to do this on your own, consult someone who has been there and done that in the same line of work that you are pursuing.

"Create goals and desires that are tangible, measurable, and on a specific timetable."
I had this issue for such a long time. I consistently set goals that were "unattainable" like you said. Things like I want to be rich by the time I'm 30. I've since realized that in order to set achievable goals I have to first follow rules like time, tangibility, and measurability.

I know exactly what you mean! I used to be the same way as well... Constantly creating goals that were immeasurable and therefore, I never had a shot at truly attaining them and feeling as though I accomplished something! It is truly amazing what you an accomplish when you set the right goals and put in the work to achieve them! Thanks so much for your continued support, you're doing a lot for this community and it is greatly appreciated ❤️

Hello, @khaleelkazi
This is great. And I affirm these great words.
Anthony Robbins once said, "If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you'll achieve the same results." Indeed, just affirming ones desire to achieve a goal isn't enough. One has to diligently work towards it.
If we look at the great achievers we have today in the world, the likes of Steve Jobs, Thomas Alva Edison, Bill Gate, and the likes, they all had a goal which they came to achieve after overcoming series of challenges. One of the major reasons why most individuals in the world don't achieve their set goals is because they believe if challenges abound in their journey, it only means they are threading on the wrong path. Hence, they give in and become mediocres. I feel individuals should always have the mindset that no matter how perfect their plans and strategies are, to achieving a goal, challenges will always abound. Hence they should always pre-play the challenges that may abound so that when it comes, they won't be taken aback. Hence, they will persist till they achieve their goals. Plus, individuals should always see challenges as Spring boards rather than stumbling blocks.
Also, if an individual desires to achieve a set goal, then he has to make sure he is in the right circle of friends. He has to be in the circle of friends who are visionaries; who ruthlessly make effort to achieve their set goals.
In addition, to achieve a set goal, which I term "Achievement Goal," one has to set three (3) mini-goals which will help him achieve the major goal.
These mini-goals are:
I will explain these goals in one of my posts.

Very interesting thoughts, thank you for sharing them. I especially like your idea of seeing challenges as spring-boards rather than stumbling blocks.. This is a very positive and good way to look at life. Life is a series of challenges and if you approach them and overcome them in the right way, they will launch you further and further towards your life-long goals.. I look forward to hearing more from you, thanks for your kind words!

I subscribe to what your post says.
Let me digress a bit... Just a bit... To look at your point in another ways (sweeter)
You mentioned adding value to the world to earn more. To continue to want to keep adding value.... The person looking to increase earning should :
And when one does something like adding value to earn more... He/she must definitely love what he does to keep at it until the expected increase in earning comes.
So whatever gains and profits gotten from the work he/she does is kind of like a bonus. Why? By adding value, He/she has improved his techniques, skills ,perfected the combos and sharpened his artillery.
Adding value is a two way profit scheme for anyone looking to earn more.
Nice article

I connect with the idea of visualizing goals for wealth and security! I am doing so with cryptos. I missed many opportunities by making excuses over the years and I will not miss this one! Thanks for the inspiration. I am writing my goals out now...the written word kept in view is one of the best motivators!

I'm so happy to see this post and learn that you are keeping up with your reading and apply reading to your posting. Attainable goals help us to go from one step to another. It is like the learning ladder of Vygosty. We can move up the ladder ring by ring. Each step we need a clear target and simple activities to accomplish the fulfillment of the target. I never read the book "The richest man in Babylon" and I'm not interested in becoming "the richest man" but there are so many things we learn here besides being the richest man in money.
First, we learn to have goals based on what we "will" do not "want". This is the way teachers write learning objectives for a lesson plan in education:
"Students will identify the way to increase income by 30% in 2018."
Second, "don't be afraid to ask for help." In this learning ladder we sometimes meet a wall. At that time we need someone there who will help us out. We need someone who has been there before. I met a few people like this on Steemit. Things here don't seem obvious at first but there are people who have pointed me in the right direction.
Finally, "increasing your ability to earn is to increase the value you give back to the world." This is important to practice every step of the way, not just when you become rich. You show this really well by beginning the Christmas contest. You wanted to give already even before reaching your goal. https://steemit.com/christmas/@khaleelkazi/tis-the-season-to-give-to-a-steemian-or-giveaway-for-usd50-worth-of-upvotes-or-december-15th
I will also look for new ways to give to others.
Thank you,
Love 365GROOVY
