This is the one video I was most advised not to make. But here it is.
I decided to make it out of anger. It's unbelievable. The current discourse on poor slum residents is out of this world. "They'll kill you, rob you, you have a camera, you're white, they'll track you, they robbed me a year ago, they stabbed my friend, etc etc"
But people forget, there is a million people in these townships. If the same stabbing happens in New York, we say: "Oh, just one crazy guy". If it happens in a slum: "all of them are crazy".
Don't get me wrong. I felt unsafe at certain times. I almost cut this video short and went back to my hotel. But the family calmed me and told me that, yes, it's dangerous, but it's not as dangerous as the world makes it sound.
The family that hosted me has no criminal record, makes honest money, and was even a victim of stabbing. But they're automatically lumped with everyone else as dangerous. Well, they're not. And I'm betting my life that there's a million more of them, and you.
I wouldn't advise this for anyone to do. Statistics don't lie, there is a lot of crime there. But please, let's be respectful of the ones that are looking to build an honest living there.
Njaki Kat - "you have a wonderful family. I'm forever grateful to you and your family for hosting me. I will see you soon for sure."
