PUBLIC BATH ARCHITECTURE

The word public bath is today used mainly for the downtown public baths. These are heated with special systems having hot and cold flowing water, closed and masonry structure.

The public bathroom has three divisions.

Changing areas: There is a large sofa surrounded by partitioned terrace parts. Those who take a shower lie down on these and rest. Changing are and camegâh(sneeze guard).

Showering areas: Entered via the cool area. This place is also partitioned into several sections. The area called the ' basin side ' where everyone takes a shower one by one. the closed and individual showering cells called the 'private room'; and the 'navel stone' where a person lies down and 'sheat his sweat'. The navel stone is built bigger than the marble covered floor of the bath and might be in several geometrical shapes.

Heating area(furnace): The area where fire burns under the bath internal sections of the bath are heated via the hot gas coming from the furnace circulating below the floor via ducts. The area below the navel stone is heated very much with this gas, and therefore it is called hell. The hot gas goes through walls and evacuated from the funnels.

The Roman Bath, which has a highly significant place in the Roman architecture generally has a monumental appearance. It is heated with an underground heating system, and the heat expands from the opening between the internal walls. Roman bath generally consist of the following partitions:

apoditerium (changing area)
frigidarium (cool area)
tepidarium (dry warmth)
caldarium (moisted heat)
sudatorium (steam bath)
