Liz Crain demonstrates how to pickup and handle a Chicken:

  • Scoop the Chicken up from the ground and hold her against your chest as quickly as possible to minimize the chance of the bird struggling.
  • Firmly graps their feet between the fingers of one of your hands and slightly back towards the Chicken's rear.
  • Flapping wings can be overwhelming for both you and the bird, so keep them close and place one hand over their wings.
  • Take the opportunity to inspect the bird's feet, cloeca, head and beak by holding them upside down in your lap with their head tucked in close to your body.
  • It's easiest to pickup Chickens as evening approaches and they've already perched in preparation for sleep. They are more docile during this period of time.
  • The more you handle your birds the more comfortable they will become with being picked up and having you around in general.
  • To put a bird down, keep your hand over their wings and bring their feet down to the ground and quickly let go.

This post really helped me pick up more chicks

I will never forget the day my Dad had me chase a chicken when we were visiting a farm, and I will tell you.. it wasn't what you'd expect to see to see on a farm.. a girl in to computer science and math all being a nerd that day and then the next minute my Dad was like, " Brooke, here go get a chicken, hahaha" low and behold it was one of my more embarrassing moments :) thanks for posting

Nice post, very helpful. A lot of people wouldn't have any idea how to pick a chicken up and I would've become one again, been a while since my family had chickens. Thank you for the post!

Thanks, If i do come in contact with a chicken, I will do this. Unless the chicken has bird flu in which case I will not pick it up this way.
