Note: swap space is not really bad these days on SSDs you should be fine with or without it.

This guide is for Ubuntu/LinuxMint for users who wish to set their OS with speed and SSDs in mind. however, I will have info below for regular HD users.

Step 1:

Install in EFI mode if possible by selecting the usb with UEFI in the title in your BIOs

Install grub boot-loader to you root partition if you are dual or even triple booting.

Do not install "Swap space" partition. SSD ONLY

Step 2: See hidden start up apps

Open terminal and type:

sudo sed -i 's/NoDisplay=true/NoDisplay=false/g' /etc/xdg/autostart/*.desktop

(hit enter)

now search for "Start-up applications" and check off the following:

Backup-Monitor’ :- If you don’t need the ‘Deja-dup’ (default data backup tool) to schedule backups, then disable it.

‘Bluetooth-Manager’ :- If you don’t use Bluetooth, then disable this too.

‘Chat’ (telepathy indicator service) :- If you don’t use the ‘Telepathy’ chat client, then by disabling this you can free up about 2.7MB of your RAM.

‘Desktop Sharing’ :- If you don’t need remote desktop or desktop sharing features (most users don’t need this) then remove the ‘check-mark’ to disable that too.
‘GPG Password Agent’ :- This is a tool that adds encryption to email clients (has nothing to do with web based email services) and chat programs, if you use them, then keep this one. Otherwise, disable it.

‘Onboard’ :- This is the on-screen keyboard that comes with Ubuntu. Most won’t be using it, so yes, you can disable this one too.

‘Orca screen reader’ :- As you can see from the name, this is a screen reader application, most can disable this.

‘Personal file Sharing’ :- Unless you’re gonna be sharing files over a network (has nothing to do with applications such as ‘Bittorrent’ or if you use the internet), disable it.

Reboot*

(type into terminal)

sudo apt-get install preload

step 3:

Open Terminal and type:

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Search for the line that says: GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

I like to switch it to 3 for 3 seconds...

(control-o to save then control-x to quit)

Step 5:

trim happens every week in ubuntu 14.10 and 15.04
but if you have 14.04 here is how:

sudo nano /etc/cron.weekly/fstrim

sed -i 's/exec fstrim-all/exec fstrim-all --no-model-check/g' /etc/cron.weekly/fstrim

Step 6:

Resizing background image in gimp

Images are located @ use/share/backgrounds

Export as image to pictures folder

Go into system settings and select the lower resolution one.

Step 8:

SSD only

System | Preferences | Power Management

Select "Dont suspend"

Step 9: SSD ONLY

Open up Terminal once again and type

sudo nano /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/com.ubuntu.desktop.pkla

Scroll to the bottom. Check to see if the following information exists, and if not add them:

[Disable suspend]
Identity=unix-user:*
Action=org.freedesktop.upower.suspend
ResultActive=no
