Surthrival Trailer Mark 1 Update 39 Generator Integration Testing

in dtube •  6 years ago  (edited)

Hello wonderful human beings of Steemit!

Today I was able to test the capability of the Surthrival Trailers' onboard smart MPPT charge controller from the Sol-Ark, and how a generator will kick in to charge the battery bank when 10% depleted.

Thank you for your time if you checked out my video! I have included a YouTube embed to make the video more available

Why the 10% set point? I would think 30% to 60% discharged (depending on battery type) might give the batteries a little more exercise.

I am glad you got it running! Happy times in 2019.

:)>

Thank you sir! I believe if you go below 80%depth of discharge you can begin to degrade these wet cell batteries. The 90% gives their controller some buffer I guess. Happy new year @smithlabs!

Oh, so you are running down further that 10%. I misunderstood, the discharge levels you intended.

I am working on LiIon batteries, to run the house I am rebuilding! So far I have 8,000 watts of the 21,000 watt battery I intend to start with. I will take the cells down to 3.0 volts to protect the cells. I will run 24 volt battery banks.

I was looking at Edison cells, may go there if I can figure out the build. Those can not be damaged by discharge, and last half a century. There is one commercial manufacturer, but they are in China, so I do NOT trust them.

But I have most of the ingredients and I am looking for containers for the cells.

I'd love to see your DIY build of the nickel Iron batteries I'm a big fan of them myself. There is a company Iron Edison that I believe is based here in the US https://ironedison.com/store

No, these are the ones from China.

The industrial-series Nickel Iron batteries are imported from one of the largest battery factories in the world, located in Sichuan province of Western China.

But I hope to make my own. The best I have been able to find thus far is a 2 quart canning jar. But it is limited to the diameter of a wide mouth jar opening. I need to build a couple to test for capacity before I order large volumes of powdered metals.

Initially, I plan to use LiIon 18650s for my battery bank. I have about a third of what I need already. I am salvaging them from old laptop battery packs.

Ahh dang, they get you on the fine print! Beautiful! you've gotta come on the podcast I co-host MeadowsandMakers sometime. I'd love to get to chat with you on air good sir!

I Love making stuff! When I get the LiIon battery together, I will post, and you can tell me what you think of it. I have been collecting information on the Edison Cell, and it looks like it is as close to a permanent cell as anything.

I take care of my wife, so scheduling for a broadcast is hard, she is my priority. We have purchased land in the country by the Lake (lake Keystone), and I am rebuilding the house now so we can move. I intend to run all the lighting on 24 volt DC, and to make the house a zero net energy house, running on solar, with wind generators for backup.

I have to move my machine shop, and my electronics lab but I have to build the building for it first. Kind of crazy right now....

Hai @makinstuff im sorry, i don't comment on your writing, it's just that i want to say "Happy new year" hopefully in 2019 get the best for us. 😊

Hey @ziapase no worries, glad you dropped a comment. I know 2019 will be awesome if we avoid the distractions and do the healing work to live life to our fullest version of ourselves and radiate that joy and love to all those around us.

yeah, we in Indonesia have been legalized crypto, and 2019 is a very lucky year for us

Very cool, might have to come visit sometime.

It looks like the trailer is pretty much ready to go now.

Thank you Amber! It's ready to roll. I want to integrate the dehumidifier water generator and an onboard aquaponics breeder system but can work on them down at my land. This was a big test I wanted to complete.

Oh wait, yeah I remember, I watched a video from you a few months back. Good to see a video man.

Thanks mayne! I'm gonna be making more videos and working on video editing.

Man, that's legit!

Surthrival indeed! Got your own entire grid in there, that's really awesome! The end of days means an increase in quality of life for some folks, eh? :)

Do they make small scale generators that are tri-fuel like the old deuce and a halfs?

Also, do you have any input on the cheapo solar panels like from northern tool or harbor freight? Thinking I might try them on my well house if they're decent.

Hey Nate! Thanks for checkin out the video bro nameth! Hell yeah or an power station for a small community/emergency response trailer for a community that can be a gathering place to charge devices and provide power to medical tents/disaster relief teams.

They totes do build smaller tri-fuel generators that are set up to be able to run off propane, natural gas, or gasoline. https://nysmartgenerators.com/

I've seen a YouTube video of someone reviewing the small systems at harbor freight and they liked em. I'd say those are good for starting with to have as a preparedness item.

Sweet! So how large of a community do you think a small solar setup like yours could sustain? Is that a goal of yours? I can see how that would be an incredible resource if the grid went down for a tornado or something. It would be awesome to be able to offer folks the ability to charge their phones or medical equipment. Not even just an end of times scenario.

Something like a 5-10 family community, yep it's part of the vision for my homestead to have the trailer be the homestead accelerator so small yurt structures can be built and powered from the trailer microgrid. A central house would have the kitchen and bathroom/gathering area. 4 More stationary panels could be added to the system to total 3.30kW of solar. Yes, I believe it could be a major asset in disaster relief.
