You can save a lot of money living the local life style, but if you miss the comfort of home then it will cost you. The gym membership you mentioned being next door to a co-work space place probably caters to western travelers hence the high rate than what you got. But yes, the saving does add up!

Yes as it is even more expensive then any of the gyms that I have every paid for in the US with the exception of when I lived in Minnesota.
