Vioxx was a deadly painkiller marketed between 1999 and 2004 as a super-aspirin much safer and much more expensive than aspirin and other traditional painkillers. In fact it greatly increased the risk of death from heart attack and stroke.
This video is a case study on the remarkably flawed data analysis used for FDA approval of Vioxx. It is taken from a longer presentation to the Caltech Alumni Entrepreneurship Group in Palo Alto on automating data analysis to reduce the risk of such costly disasters.
Please note:
The presenter is not a qualified medical professional. Nothing in this video, specifically including the Vioxx case study, is intended as medical or legal advice and should not be treated as such. If you have a medical, legal, or other issue or concern that requires qualified professional advice such as a medical condition, you should get advice from a properly qualified professional such as a licensed medical doctor or attorney.
A written version of the Vioxx Case Study is found on page 14 and following pages of this white paper: http://wordpress.jmcgowan.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Automating-Complex-Data-Analysis-White-Paper.pdf
