All musical instruments - Subdivision exercise

in dtube •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hi Steemit!

Today I wanted to share a quick video about practicing subdivisions.
This can be applied to any instrument, even if you are a singer you can do it with each hand on the lap, and taping your foot to a tempo, or using the metronome (recommended).

The idea behind this exercice is to get more confortable with different subdivisions in a regular tempo on a 4/4, try to follow the changes at your own speed, doesn't have to be fast, but focus on making a smooth transition between the note groups, and also aim to go back and forth between them.

The more used you get to play odd (5, 7, 9, etc) and regular subdivisions (4, 8, 12, etc), and change between them without stopping, the greater your time feel will become and your ability to play some rhythmic deas will also be improved.

What I played on the video was :

  • Quarter notes (4 per bar)
  • Quarter notes triplets (6 per bar)
  • Eight notes (8 per bar)
  • Eight notes triplets (12 per bar)
  • Sixteenth notes (16 per bar)
  • Sixteenth notes quintuplets (20 per bar)
  • Sixteenth notes sixtuplets (24 per bar)
  • Sixteenth notes septuplets (28 per bar)
  • Thirty-second notes (32 per bar)

I inverted the sticks so I could work on the heavy part of the drumstick and improve finger strenght and muscle stamina, but I try not to spend too much time doing that, we don't want to stress our muscles too much.

I hope you find this useful, no matter where you decide to practice this! Let me know how it went or if you have any questions.

Please up-vote, re-steem and follow me @matiasmenarguez
