From https://www.rojodojo.com A preview of my Bujinkan video exploring 片胸捕 Katamune Dori. The name of the kata is descriptive of the attack. It means grabbing one side of the mune, or chest. This is 高木揚心流柔体術 Takagi Yoshin Ryū Jūtaijutsu, so the response will reflect the strategies from that school.
Use the cover unique to the school. Then break the grip. Not with your hands but with your body! When I trained with Hatsumi Sensei in December, he described it as seperating yourself from the attack. This can be understood on many levels. In fact, at one point he said we must become “almost like a (妖怪 youkai) spirit or a monster.”
The next steps happen quickly: You 手刀 shuto 霞 kasumi; take ura gyaku; control the shoulder joint; and kick the thigh. The fall for the opponent prevents any ukemi that would allow for escape. Then you pin with 逆折押え込み gyaku ori osae komi.
In December, Hatsumi described how, “you fit the body in this space.” He went on to say that the 大本 taihon, foundation or basic principle, is the kukan. That means that the use of space is fundamental for taijutsu. It is not about any technique, but rather the way you control and use space.
To demonstrate this, I shared how to enter into the gap that is created when we break the attack. Or, you close the gap with the ura waza 突倒 tsuki taoshi. This means sudden drop, and you hug the elbow to your body and drop on it. It will break. I even showed a henka using the sutemi of 横流れ yoko nagare to do this.
These are all mean, and that includes the next ura gata 逆倒 gyaku taoshi. Use a 本逆 hon gyaku to create a reaction in your opponent. Then drop him using his own attempts to escape from the pain.
We finished with 十手術 jutte jutsu. We can catch the attacker’s wrist, elbow, or shoulder with the hook to create a lock. Then slam the iron rod into the knee for the takedown. If he stabs with a knife, the jutte offers many methods to trap or disarm.
