What I've done today... Where I've been.

Or rather, where we've been.

This morning, Trev and I took a little road trip - just an itty-bitty one, out into the next county (not country), to where we were both born and bred.

Although we've lived in Nottinghamshire longer (about twice as long) than we lived in Derbyshire, Derbyshire played such a major part in our formative years that we keep going back.

On a day like today, cold, but bright and beautiful, we're glad we have that option.

There will be a video to accompany this post and until I can figure it out and become confident with it all, it will have to be two posts (I think). I'll give a commentary in written form, as well as pictures.

We set out from home and a woman almost wiped us out before we were off the street! She cut right across the junction just as we approached it.

I totally understand how people get annoyed at some drivers.

Then we went through Trev's home town and through to Alfreton, a little market town on the edge of the Derbyshire countryside.

We stopped for a while and took pictures of the 'House of Confinement' - a little one-room 'jail house' of sorts that was used to lock up ne'er do wells back in the 19th century.

The last time it was used was for a soldier that had overstayed his leave and had to be locked up. The jail's cells were full, so he spent a night in the House of Confinement. What a claim to fame!

The next place of interest in Alfreton is the Abraham Lincoln Library - yep, that Abraham Lincoln!

On the way back to the car, I spotted something that speaks volumes of our history - or rather, I didn't spot it because it had been removed a long time ago.

In war-time, we had a serious shortage of metal and so the railings from public areas were cut off and sent away for use in the 'Scrap Metal Drives' for the war effort!

Then on to the next part of the journey.

A short while ago, I wrote a story about 'Danny' the pony that was hit by a drunk-driver back when I was a kid. The story can still be read Here I've made a short video of the area - the drive we'd have taken on the way to the stables that morning and the estimated place in the fence where I saw the police cars and poor Danny.

The snap pic is of the stables entrance (which I didn't mention) on the right side (white fence).

I think I'll leave it there for now and continue this journey through my past for another day.

We love the English countryside so much. Even your jailhouse has charm!

As Americans, why can't we just renounce our Puritan ancestors and move back? The immigration requirements are insane.

Nah... you guys had your chance... stay where you are :D

And I was gonna bring you a present and everything! Oh well...

Well, in that case...

I'm planning to visit USA later this year, I'll pick up the present on my way though ;)

Lovely clear and bright video of Derbyshire and the audio was spot on. Pity about the memories that the road has for you but that's life I guess.
I liked the old lock-up I bet it was pretty dire to be banged up there in the winter time and the Ab Lincoln library? What's the story on how that got there?

Yeah... one of life's tragedies.

The lock-up was used as a one-night thing I think. Probably best...

The Abe Lincoln Library was built by a man that emigrated to America and made a vast fortune there. He founded the Watchorn church too (close to the library).

That's just off the top of my head, I'll do better research and write a post about it with still pics too.

That's so cool to hear about the guy who founded the library and church.
Thanks to people like him I spent some of the happiest times of my childhood in these types of library.
They were true philanthropists.

They really were. I wrote a little more about him today - after I checked a few facts of course.

What a wonderful way to spend the day - loved the video. :)

It's really cool morning road trip video And audio is so captivating @michelle.gent.
Everything is looking so beautiful in the morning time. I really like the locked up little room of jail house. Thanks for sharing the information about this little room.
I am really gald to see especially the Abraham Lincoln library. I really appreciate your feelings for "Danny" It's really sad but this is the part of our life. waiting for more about your journey.
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us.

Yayyyyyyyyyyyy.... See who is on Dtube😊😊😊.
The room for the never do wells really looks like one.

I'm sure that journey brought back some memories,a journey to one's childhood always always leave them both with the good and bad memories but more of the good cos we were some "carefree no worries kid" then.

Looking forward to the second video!
Keep steeming!

A journey with time is interesting and the events are nice to live life experiences, yes what I like is the sequence of events, I can not express a particular event, even if simple.
Thank you for sharing our life and your experiences

A very enjoyable trip, surely you are very happy to visit the place where you are born (hometown). I also often travel like that, especially when I again stress I will travel to return home, because there can make my soul happy, after I meet with my parents and old friends and I visit some places that I spend time in childhood, it has a very beautiful memento. I think we are often home to where we were born, because there stored some memory when we were little. I hope you have a beautiful day. thank you @michelle.gent

Love the video, Michelle! I could hear you! Marvellous! A really nice day to drive through the country side. Nicely done.

The jail's cells is very interesting. I would like to see it from inside. They can do it for tourist ?!
