People tend to get fixated on things like followers and be jealous of other people. I think with time and a lot of work from the community steemit will start to change that mentality into that of helping others.

You mention a crucial point, my friend!
It's about the mentality, exactly that.

People usualy think, not in this particullar topic, if they have a big number of audience they will earn and gain lot of trust and confidence. The thing is that even thought we have large audience we may have small rewards, things may happen the other way, having small audience but with power will earn a lot.

Exactly. And also in time, you will see that a large following of a person does not result in engagement.

Honestly, that is correcy

when i joined steemit i was told that you need followers to make it here but as time went by i realized its a race for futility , they dont add much so i change tact and concentrated on writing great articles

I totally agree with you @modernpastor, it is just a number! It is also the same as focusing on fame but not delivering quality output.

Thank you for sharing this @modernpastor! :)

Like always I agree with you :)

Great points man. This is so tough for newer Steemians to come and board and get jealous and scream why can't I have thousands of followers. Put in the work. Grind! Hustle. Add value to others....And actually take part in the discussions. The followers will come. I'm only about 190 followers in, but I know this is a multiple-year process for me....So I'll see how I'm doing in 2-3 years from now :)

Add value daily, that'll take care of the follower issue.

Awesome comment my friend. And true. It's a real desire and more present in newcomers. As you said how would look in 2-3 years when you go your way and provide valuable things for this community? Excellent long-term perspective my friend.

Appreciate that. Yeah man, gotta think long term for things like this. And this may sound corny but the real wealth in places like Steemit are the people you meet and the experiences you gain. Followers and upvotes, are a bonus. Come for the right reasons, people will do fine in 2-3 years.

I totally agree with you on that :)

@modernpastor amazing post! Jealousy is the one of the worst enemys who can distract you from your path! I am not saying that i haven’t felt it but in time i managed to surpress it and overcome it! Thank you for sharing experience and explaining everything so accurate. I cannot agree more with you!

Thanks for your great comment :)
I can also agree with you. Jealousy is taking our energy. This energy would be a better use for something else, something useful you could create. It's part of the human nature. But the worst thing is when you allow this feeling to guide you.

Am a newbiee here but, Steemit is all about hard work by dedicating your time, posting, commenting and upvoting and again study how the community works. I bet you it pays
@follykay

Welcome here to Steemi, my friend :)
It's great to see that already, in the beginning, you have this kind of mindset. This will bring you far.

I want to appreciate your selfless lesson you shared particularly for the beginers. I have learnt a lot. God bless you. I upvote you.

Thanks for your kind words. I am glad when people can actually get something out of it.
God bless you too my friend :)

You're absolutely right, I think a lot of people here on Steemit follow people just in the hope that they will follow them back. My account now has over 1100 followers but most have never actually engaged with me.

Hey captain :)
Yes, I observed also with my followers.

i am not at all worried abut that number to me the activity really matters that number will go up and down and may be zero but friends stay forever

Exactly! The activity, the engagement is much more important than the pure number.

Wise words - In the end, beginners just have to remember one saying:

Quality > Quantity

This goes for followers as well as for posts, comments and upvotes!

Greets ;)

yes quantity get quality

Hey, I got just one suggestion (only one!), please mix your voice as a bit louder than the sound effects. This makes it so much easier to hear what you're saying ^3^

Thanks for this suggestion. I will keep that in mind :)

Thumbs up if you came because you wanted more followers XD

(ps please check out my page btw)

Thank you @modenpastor.
I believe with persistence and creativity, the followers will rise in number, albeit with time.
As a newbie in Steemit, I have followers who do not even know me in person, but yet followed me due to one reason or the other.
For instance, no one told me about your account, but I discovered your account by the amazing posts and videos you deliver frequently.

Thanks, @bolanlebolaji for your kind comment.
Yes, persistence and creativity are two major keys not only to this plattform.
And that you find me that way prove how important it is ^^

I just realized having many followers that doesn't take out time to go through your work is worst than the few followers you've got. I take out time everyday and go through all my followers blog to read, comment and upvote their posts. To me, I feel it's a good thing because I keep my circle small for a better and reachable communication.

Your comment persuaded me to follow and check your content! Will do that today, I also hope you will find some time for my starting blog here :-) I like your attitude!

What I found is that minnows will up vote you once then don't tend to keep following suite. After that rationalization I stopped giving up votes on their post also.

This is indeed great :)
In this way, you want to give your followers something back. I like that attitude. But I would like to know @lizzieharrison what would you do when your followers grow? I mean I don't think that you would say: guys stop following me :)

I would like to know your answer :)

If one having more follower more people will see one's posts. So, there is more probability of getting more votes because people are resource, money on the table and don't forget that, people are the foundation of what we are building here at steemit.

I have to say that I don't see it that way.
Only more people does not mean that more people will see your posts.
Imagine not everyone is online at the same time. No include bots and people who are no more active here.

Simply see the views on your posts and thencomparee this number to the upvotes you get.
I believe its hard to get the same amount of upvotes as you have followers.

I believe more in the quality of people instead of the quantity.

People beg big channels on youtube for shoutouts, and despite getting thousands of more subs that way, most of them don't bother to watch their videos since they were never given much motivation beyond being ordered by the bigger youtuber to subscribe

I don't like if people beg that way. I have nothing when someone friendly asks if this would be a possible way because this person has interesting stuff to share. But pure begging and hoping this will boost the account is also an illusion. People will follow when you have something worth sharing.

In the past weeks I had been scavenging for followers, but lately I have realized that it's just about posting great articles and interested people will follow.... The aim is earning STEEM not really the followers though their upvotes really counts.

Im not shocked about the amount of follower the person has, im shocked about the money the person makes.

Im fully interested

Hi @modernpastor how are you?
A good topic to think about. Personally, I think that the number of followers does not play a major role. This can be judged by some circumstances. For example, you can have 500 followers - beginners who do not read your blog and do not support you. On the other hand, you can have 100 followers, and half of them will support your posts and comment on them.
This is a coefficient of usefulness and determines all the benefits of followers.
I have a growing number of followers. But this does not make my posts more popular. Only not many of my followers really support me.
This is my subjective opinion. It's important not the quantity - but the quality :)
Thank you

Exactly, that is the important point.
That's why I am saying that it is an illusion, thinking that the pure number will mean more success. It's just a number and this number don't reveal the quality of your followers.

I have been looking at following those that follow me, I am on a journey so all information is appreciated. Only once their content is seemingly lacking or irrelivent will I unfollow but I have stumbled onto a few nice works that normally I wouldn’t have discovered this way.

This is good to hear my friend.
I think you will discover more of good works :)

Nice post man... Interesting and educative.

From my view you and experience, you are perfectly right, quality is more than quantity in this way too... thats why I try to aim my content to people who can help to create the value not just hit the follow bar!

As long as I am pretty new here I will appreciate if you could find some time to check my introduce post and also the first two posts to throw some feedback and support. I will be pleased for any advice from more experienced guy how to improve my content and contrubution.

I hope you ll enjoy it!

Thank you, my friend :)
I am glad when this was at least a bit helpful.
When I have the time I will try to read your posts :)

At least my introduce, I am sure it can attract you and any of feedback from more experienced guy will raise me up! :-)

you just hit the nail on the head @modernpastor , at the beginning when i was just introduced to steemit the first mentally i had was following others without even knowing what they blog about or do, hoping that they will follow me back. But along the line i started to understand that it not about the amount of followers or the people you follow that matters, so i stop doing that, and i focus More on my blog. Consistently i started having follows though the number is not much but these followers of mine always want to see my post and contribute to it unlike those one i begged to follow me.

According to your words

Deliver, be yourself and provide added value. It might take time before people will see it, followers will be the side effect of your recognize value you are providing in the community. it's just a number

That's the fact, thanks for sharing

This is good to hear my friend :)
You made your experience and from that, you have learned that it's not effective to focus only on this number. Doing everything that this number increases.

I think now you are on the right way, my friend :)
Focus on your blog to deliver useful content to your audience.

thanks very much for your encouragement @modernpastor i wish others especially the newbies will be able to understand this illusion and put more of their attention in providing quality content rather than looking for followers

You're right. I also hope that.
I think the life will teach them ;)

Most followers are fake and just want you to follow back.

Some are fake, some are real but not active.

cheers for the post, its def all about the quality you can bring to the community. Grind hard and produce quality content and the following will grow :)

Exactly :)

I am a beginner but I did not jealous of others who have many followers because they earn it and put too much effort to achieve it. Be confident and believe in yourself in order to attain your goal. Thank you for sharing @modernpastor

That's a good attitude. To be jealous is a waste of energy. :) let's focus in that what we can provide.

Nothing more to add my friend :)

This will help allot

This post has received gratitude of 2.48 % from @appreciator thanks to: @modernpastor.

Some people pay for followers. That doesn't mean that they get substance, it also doesn't have to preclude it either.

Here on Steemit too? 😲

tks a lot.learn more as a fresh here...

To those who are obsessed with getting more followers, steemit is not instagram. Having followers only looks fancy on Steemit. It helps. But not very much.
Thanks for sharing @modernpastor

Great said sister :)
This is correct, Steemit is not Instagram. Appics will be it may be.

I must admit I was shocked when I saw how many followers some people have... and of course the first impulse is to compare yourself with that.
So thank you for your post and for reminding us about our true value.

This is a part of human nature. And it's fine. It's getting bad when you let this impulse being your guide. We have to learn how the social life really works.

Thanks for your kind words :)

These kind of tricks can be very alluring especially to people like me who are just starting. This post is very welcomed.
Thank you

I know what you mean I think it's in every newcomer here. Some more and some less.
But at the end its just a number. :)

It's natural. Everybody wants to skip the hard work and get straight to the rewarding phase. But in the long run, hardwork gets you places, cheap-tricks dont.

I am just a few days old and from the WELCOME writeup, i am told to make friends. So i started looking for a chat platform but found out there is much going on outside chat. Following and having followers seems not to be a perfect way of making friends. I do not know when and if people read my post (which is more important) not to talk of upvotes. Its beginning to frustrate me

Hey my friend :)
Don't be frustrated.
You're just in the beginning.

A good thing needs time to grow.
Also your account here on Steemit. I know that it is hard in the beginning but this is the way most of us have to go.

There are some discords channels where people are connecting each other. Maybe this would be something for you?

You're absolutely right! I have more than 1200 followers but most of the time I get 15-20 upvotes, and you really think to yourself why people click follow if they don't have any tendency to actually follow.
Steemit is now a chaotic place with thousands of trolls and people who are here just for the money, but hopefully it will all balance out soon.
Cheers man! Keep it up!

@marinauzelac I totally understand you and you're so right :)
I observed myself on my account. I also often ask myself why are people are clicking to follow.
Same as you I hope that this will balance out soon.

Thanks for your comment :)

thanks for useful information and sharing.
I expect support for cooperation.

I agree, I have many, many follower, but cant even get a single view or only a few even when I am giving away free crypto. I could only imagine the majority of my followers have given up and left steemit

Yeah it's true, follower count doesn't always lead to more engagement with your content. I wish there were a way to identify your active follower count as to get a good litmus test measuring the amount of people who might engage with your stuff. Many followers are random and dud accounts. :p

yup, even if there was a last active tab on each users account that is easily viewable from the followers tab

Ahhhh I think there is one tool.
It shows your most active users.
Ahhhh I forgot the name.
I have to look for it. Maybe this sill be a help.

Its all good, I know there are a lot of steem tools out there. :)

I am sorry my friend.
Yes, it could be that people already left steemit. But anyway the good thing is that you don't need to focus on that now :) You already felt that many followers means nothing.

that's for sure. It seemed too good to be true.

all want his followers a lot

You really got it! No matter how other people says they are contented but deep with in, there is something called jealousy they just can't hide. Like seriously, it's just a number and it doesn't actually measured you as a person. However, we can't really just change the fact that we don't have the same mentality with other people. This is not direct to anyone, but some just think that having those numbers is a great help in earning. But, I believe it's not the numbers that counts but the thought that is with in your writings. As a newbie in the Steemit community, I don't have lots of followers and at first I feel bad, but now I feel great not having lots will help you determine those who are truly reading and appreciating you works in writings!

Oh this is so true. I saw some of the accounts here on SteemIt where the number of followers was huge. But when I looked o their earnings or engagement, it looked pretty poor. Real connections matter. Thanks for sharing.
