You can save a lot of money living the local life style, but if you miss the comfort of home then it will cost you. The gym membership you mentioned being next door to a co-work space place probably caters to western travelers hence the high rate than what you got. But yes, the saving does add up!

Yes it is so cheap here that it is insane. The US dollar does indeed go further here. I plan to check out South America at some point in the future once I get situation in the Philippines.
