[EP143] - Overuse Injuries - how to avoid, fix and also not fix...

in dtube •  6 years ago

Hi everyone!
Hope you're all well!

Overuse injuries are pretty much the worst.
We all get them at some point, and I know so many people that have basically had to stop doing what they enjoy because of overuse injuries... and they all become so much more common the older you get.

But, all is not lost.
To avoid getting overuse injuries, don't go too hard too fast. If you're starting a new workout regime or sport, ease into it. For runners... add 10% more distance on every week. If you feel something coming on, ease out of it, work out which movement causes the pain and then once swelling stops (if there was any) and then work out that area really lightly... and gradually increase intensity or weight so that it doesn't hurt, or barely hurts... and work up from there.

I'm not convinced that rest does a lot... I've had plantar fasciitis which I rested for 5 months, and found it came back worse... and my current Cimber's Elbow, which I rested for about 6 months with no improvement. Very slow and gradual increases while working out is the best way forward.

Lately my elbow was feeling much better... so I changed from my rehab exercises to my ninja warrior training exercises, and was gentle, but my elbow started hurting (for the first time in a month) a couple of hours afterwards and has continued 5 days later.

I'll basically go back to my rehab exercises, get back to normal, and then slowly introduce other exercises in... and watch it carefully. Unfortunately, slow and systematic is the only way forward... which is why, I'm sure, why most people just give up and don't do that activity anymore.

Thanks for watching!
