It's important to bring in new blood to breed with your chickens. I like to keep several different breeds so it is easy to tell them apart. When you mix different breeds you get a hybrid which are usually exceptionally vigorous. We currently breed black star and easter egger hybrids.
I purchased 6 barred rock females and another 6 that I believe are buff orpingtons. They also had some ducks so I couldn't resist taking home a couple with me.
