Open Letter to All the Dtubers. Where is Your audience?steemCreated with Sketch.

Hello,

I have been thinking about talking with all of You about this situation that I think it is slowing down the growth of our community and the @dtube platform.

Let me start with one simple Question.
Why have Youtube, the biggest Video platform, became so popular?

And the answer it is very simple. They have an audience.

I feel that the Dtube community is doing a great job and creating amazing content. When it comes to promote it out there I also think we are doing a great job.

But...
And this is where I think a lot of us are falling. The way we promote the platform is directed to other content creators only. We never introduce it as a good place for regular / non content creators to come and consume content.

That will also influence the type of content We are creating. Because if we know the majority of People that are consuming videos are other content creators, we will focus on creating content for that target audience.

Now. What we should be thinking about is that even if nowadays it is very popular and there are a lot of content creators online. The majority of People that use the internet are not in that realm.

I feel that when promoting the platform and the type of content that is created here we should be focusing more on bringing in a bigger audience. People that come to Dtube just to watch and enjoy videos, leave comments and talk about whatever is the type of content You upload.

Because if there is traffic on the platform and there are a big audience consuming content, all the content creators will benefit from it and also organically will bring more Online Video content creators without the need of doing such a direct and targeted type of promotion.

My point
To all the amazing content creators out there on Dtube that are uploading and focusing on connecting and creating content for other content creators. I bet more than 50% or more, never wanted to create that type of content. So Focus on creating what You Love and bring with You an audience that enjoy that type of videos.

Having a platform where 90% of the audience are the content creators themselves will not bring more people from outside or even make other people in the STEEM blockchain interested in checking our videos. People will not relate to the videos and feel that we are a closed circle just creating videos for this "elite" group that upload on Dtube.

How can we turn this around?
You have a niche, a specific type of People that enjoy the same things You do. So You should be creating videos for them. Finding ways for them to come back for Your next upload. Make sure You interact with You audience, even if they just joined the blockchain and their vote it is only worth $0.0001. Make sure You show love to Your audience because something so simple as that might make them come for more and tell other people about You.
Also when You talk about Dtube anywhere else in the internet, don't do it always from the point of view of recruiting other content creators. Talk about the benefits for the audience. Tell them they could be watching DIY videos of Yours (for example) and if they leave a comment they could be making money out of it.

I think everyone is doing a great job and there are amazing content creators on Dtube. But now it is time to start bringing in the Audiences.

Hope that my point didn't came across in a rude manner because that is not the goal.

But let me know Your thougts about this situation?

I had the same thought a couple of days back but felt like I was being silly and stupid. Now I see I was on to something.

Dtube is very often compared to youtube and mostly the comparison is shrugged off by saying "youtube is older" "youtube is a bigger platform" "youtube is this and that""
but the fact is, youtube, too, started off small and tiny just like dtube. If we do not take the appropriate steps towards growing the platform then we can never make dtube as big as we aspire it to be.

That brings me to saying this: youtube is equal parts creators and audience. Nothing different about dtube. There will be no dtube without the creators, nor without the audience. It is a very careful balance that keeps the ball rolling.

#pbchitchatshow was 1 way we tried to battle the issue of having repetitive and a creator oriented platform. The whole idea was to gather an audience who just might want to spend so light time enjoying a show, and not being confined to just creators. So far, it has been running well and the show has brought it some loyal fans.

Another way we used #pbchitchatshow to being in more audience into dtube was by giving away steem just for watching it. No need to make a dtube vlog, no need to make a reply vlog. JUST WATCH AND UPLOAD A PIC. Thats it.

You really hit the nail in the head. We need to start promoting content and not creating. We need to promote dtube to reach the perfect balance between creators and audience.

This does not mean, in anyway, that I do not want more creators on dtube. I DO WANT MORE CREATORS. The mroe creators there are, the more niche and fanbases we can grow. But, we need an audience first of all.

Glad that you brought this up. More power to you!

Thanks man. I thought it would be a good idea to do it in a written format to avoid making the mistake that I am. Talking about. Also because I feel there are many people here in the Steem blockchain that don't even know they can watch videos from creators in the community right in here. I have spoke about this a couple of times but by myself I only can do as much... Specially because I am a smaller influencer in here and I don't reach too many people. But with my videos and content I hope that I am also helping to make that change happening.

And you said perfectly when you said: "We need to start promoting content and not creating."

Glad to see more people see that this is a "problem" in the community.

It is more of a growth challenge than a problem. With persistence we can conquer this problem for our beloved platform.
Question is, how do you think I can help you raise awareness about this? I am open to discussion and let's plan something and make it happen!!!

The best thing to do is to create. Just create. Ask the people that watch your videos to leave a comment. Ask them a question or an opinion on the video and ask them to comment about it on the comments. Reply to their comments and upvote them... Even if only 1%. Ask them to share your videos. Resteem. Share in other platforms. Just simple things like this.

@sergiomendes, thank you for sharing your thoughts about DTube with us. It was interesting to read.

A pleasure. What do you think about it? Do you think I am right? What can we do to change that?

Great points. I especially like the idea of encouraging people to sign up to be able to comment and potential for earnings just from commenting.

Thanks for that. It is always good to see all the points of You around. That's why I like to upvote the majority of my comments... Not only show people that appreciate them and the fact they take the time to watch what I create but also make them come for more. I think if more creators were doing the same people would be more active. 🤔

That’s been my approach even just with blogging, which I do more often than videos. I even bought a lot of steem at one point just so I could reward comments on my posts more highly. The dive crypto took right after that made it o the whole not such a great decision. But in general I think it’s important to reward engagement with content.

Yeah the situation of the market lately haven't been helpful to get people here. But that is a whole other problem that I might talk in another post or even video. But it connect with this in the end. Because we promote the community as a place where creators can be rewarded so everyone comes in thinking about making a fast buck without any work and we all know that doesn't work that way eheheh

I agree with you. A lot of content creators on Dtube create content that is directed at Dtube/Steemit and its users only. It doesn't attract an outside audience. Dtube isn't Youtube but it does need more videos that you would see on Youtube to get people excited for the site.
I like the gaming community on Dtube as its something people outside of the platform can watch and enjoy as they would on Youtube or Twitch.
I am very dedicated to this platform and have used it daily for a year and a half now but I don't purposefully make my videos about Dtube/Steemit for this very reason.

I think making videos about the blockchain and crypto it is not what is wrong. It is that the videos are made for people that are already in here and that are creators themselves. I think we need to focus on making videos that are for people that have no interest in creating content. But just consume. Even if it is Blockchain and crypto related. 😊

Yes you're right that is actually what I meant but I didn't explain myself clearly :)

Cool 😊 maybe I was the one that haven't understood it ehehe

dtube is very young and still have to improve @sergiomendes so users of it just have to do what they are passionate about and share it as a dtube video.
In that way they will attract audiences of like-minded people from the steem community but if they would of course share it to Facebook and other social media then dtube will get to be known and discovered and it will be a network effect.
Soon dtube will grow, we just needed time and exposure.

You are right and said it all. It is about sharing what you love and get together with like minded people. That is the way to go. And not just do it for the attention and the money. 😊 Although obviously that is important as well but I feel that comes if you are really creating with your heart.

Absolutely...100% agree.. For dtube videos we need audience and promotion. Like outside of dtube and steem world , people don't have any idea about this platform. So promotion can be a way to attract outside world where we can also include about getting paid ..Audience should not be limited..

Yeah and that is the problem. A lot of us just create for our friends that are other Dtubers and don't think about new people that might come across our videos. And if they will find they won't find interesting because they can't relate.

Posted using Partiko Android

Great topic. The network effect hasn't struck gold on dtube (or steemit) yet. It's still too insular.

Posted using Partiko Android

Agree with you. But it is our fault. All of us need to change daily and alert people. Otherwise we will be stuck in this same circle and not evolve 😉

Posted using Partiko Android

Dtube isn't as easy to use at YouTube. It requires additional effort to ensure our videos will upload if at all. Thankfully uploading has improved, but there are still people who simply can't upload.

People aren't familiar with what BlockChains are or how/why they'd have to make a Steemit Account. Sure, for you and I who made the effort to get involved we get it, but people are still looking for easy and convenient platforms.

See but that is exactly what I am talking about. We can't think about that. Because a lot of people probably want to just watch videos and then they come here and only see our conversations and videos about the evolution and struggles we have as creators and they have zero interest in that so they won't ever come back. That is exactly my point when I say we can't think everyone that will be on Dtube will be there to create. That is our mistake.
