This was the first track off the first album of my band Blu Simon. We were very into classic rock at the time. We recorded this whole album on a shoestring budget with Rick Carson of Make Believe Studios in Omaha, NE. It was a solid month of recording in 2009. We finished recording and mixing over the next 6 months. The album was released in 2010 and we sold our whole printing of 1000 copies by touring around the Midwest and playing every hole in the wall bar you can think of.
Because we loved the sound of the old recordings we attempted to style our recording after that. We used lots of old tube amps even running guitars through the tube preamps of an old Sony tape machine and the amp in an old Thomas organ. This was my first time really getting to layout and record an album like this. It was a concept album dealing with my own disillusionment of growing up to discover the American Dream I was sold as a kid was nothing more than fantasy. There is nothing wrong with working hard and building a life for yourself, but this album was exploring the lies that I was told from a young age about America.
The album parallels my journey from the optimism through frustration and in the end to hope. This first song is the jumping off point. Its a play on the "dueling the devil" theme. A fun rock and roll number that features a devil solo and a hero solo. The end does cut abruptly because we recorded it to roll into the next song on the track. If you like this or anything else please download it, rip it off of youtube or you can buy it off of itunes if you want to go that route. Let me know what you think. I plan on releasing things is semi order of when they were recorded, but I'll play it by ear.
