Great discussion guys, I have a potential idea...
Stream the open mic tour nights on dlive, make sure when you go live you draw a lot of attention and upvotes to make the post as valuable as possible. Then offer to share the post rewards with the artists if they sign up to Steemit. Image for example if the post gets $500 and 5 artists play the open mic night, that's a $100 dollar incentive each to get signed up, and a great first impression of the Steemit community.

This @captaincanary is very insightful! we hav been wanting to live streem either a busker or an open mic event, but publicse it to steemit in advance so everyone knows what time and place it will be. it would become the worlds first interactive tipping session live streemed! love the idea of sharing the rewards with the new artist! I love these "everyone wins" solutions! I would love to keep this idea going...
