The Steem Sister Show - Episode 65 // Family Expectations

in dtube •  6 years ago

Welcome to the 65th episode of the Steem Sister Show! (and the final episode for 2018)

Your hosts are @coruscate and @maryjaney. Two sisters bringing fun content to the Steem blockchain!

Topic of this Episode – Family Expectations

Phew - this one was a doozy! Family expectations always seem a little higher during the holidays, so we thought it would be an interesting thing to discuss coming out of that season.

Here are the questions we answered this episode.

  • Do you think you push your own expectations on other family members?

  • How has your approach to family expectations changed over the years?

  • How do you deal with being guilt tripped by family members?

  • @aussieninja – Did your family impact your career or university selection at all?

  • Why do you think some family members try to put their own expectations and agendas on someone else?

What is the Steem Sister Show All About?

We aim to bring more “non-crypto” related content to the Steem Blockchain. Although there is nothing wrong with this kind of content (@coruscate even posts on crypto related material sometimes) – we want to help create a better onboarding experience for new users. We talk a lot about attracting new users to the platform – but if the trending page is filled with crypto posts and flagging wars, they are likely to lose interest quickly.

We hope that by creating content that is more similar to what they are used to seeing on other social media sites – they will feel more excited about being here and creating content of their own!

How Does It Work?

We pick a different topic every episode, and then throw totally random questions about that topic in a hat and go back and forth. We always have a mix of our own questions and some audience questions. Our rule is that we cannot tell each other our answers before filming! So you guys are getting our raw, unfiltered reactions here.

Every episode we announce the next week’s topic so people can submit questions.

Want to win some Steem??

If we chose to answer your question in the next show… we will send you 2 Steem!

Next Week’s Topic: Our Personal Style

We are gettin' a little girly in our next episode! We are going to be talking all about shopping, accessories, how we define our own style, where we like to shop etc. This may even end up including tings like makeup and hair as well.

So send us your questions! If we choose to answer your question, we will send you 2 steem.

That’s a Wrap!

We really hope you guys enjoyed this episode on family expectations! We ended the episode with a question to you guys. If you have family members that tend to be controlling/guilt trip you - why do you think they do this? We look forward to chatting with you all in the comments below!

With Love,

The Steem Sisters

Ha! that cover photo is amazing! How many non-laughing tries did it take?

I was in a similar situation to young Lea there... My mum was so controlling that I was pretty much forced to leave home at 19, and didn't talk to her for 8 months. Things were a lot better after that, even though I was still at Uni so it was hard to pay bills, etc, but just being outside her sphere of control was 1000% less stress in my life.

I think a lot of family expectations come from people who are in a strong community (religious or cultural, etc) - my Grandparents really wanted me to join the army because that's what their friend's grandkids were doing, and no one understood what computers were good for... Melbourne has some really, really strong cultural communities (ie, all the Italian people who migrated in the 50s hang out together) and so all of my friends whose parents are in those communities had way more expectations on them than any of their cousins, friends, etc who still lived in the original countries.

A lot of third/fourth generation Australians didn't have a fraction of the pressure put on them by their parents, it was interesting to compare. My mum was controlling, and would absolutely lose it if we didn't do chores, etc but wasn't concerned with what my sister and I studied, did for work, etc. My Italian and Croatian friends had their parents do literally everything for them at home, but definitely had to go to Uni and get a white collar job. My Italian and Greek female friends had to fight their parents just to go to Uni, because the family expectations would be that they'd just get married and have kids... but their Aunts and Uncles still in Italy were far more progressive towards their cousins.

TL;DR : People who spent a lot of time hanging in their groups comparing all their kids heap on the family expectations and guilt trips.

P.S) I know I've generalized a lot culturally here, and as per all generalizations, it wasn't with 100% of the people I knew in those groups, but it was the general pattern we all noticed.

My style question is:

How much Steem would it take to get you to get a mohawk in the official steem colours?

My mantra when buying clothes is, can I climb a fence in this?

@maryjaney looks like an actor from a TV show that i saw before
#ZAP

Oh yeah?? Do you remember what the show was? That's so fun!

My question. Which best hair style you prefare best?

I do not know, but for many offenses that may be between the family, it is always better to forget and forgive :)

P.S: How I would have loved to see the fight to be sisters, something like family WWC hahahaha (just kidding)

haha!! That would be a funny video for sure. Watch out Steemit... Steem Sister WWC is coming. JK :)
