It is no surprise that antidepressants and antipsychotics don't work over the long term. Besides the fact that the brain compensates for the effect of these drugs, and creates more problems with neurotransmission; these drugs do not solve the underlying psychological problems that alter brain function and structure. Thus, it is not a "brain disorder" that causes psychological disturbances, it is psychological disturbances that cause "brain disorder." Currently, modern psychiatry has not been able to admit to how much behavior and thinking contribute to what they refer to as "mental illness." They believe that the brain is broken from the start or genetics ultimately led to the problem. But this theory represents a gross misunderstanding of the mind-body relationship.

Yes, agreed:) Although genetics can make people more vulnerable. At least in my country Norway, most of the psychiatric diagnoses are made because a person is not able to thrive in the modern work environment, and thus need to get a diagnosis to get money from the welfare state and also to not loose the job. Is to be maladapted to modern life an illness? Also, many psychedelic compound had very promising effect on anxiety, alcohol abuse and PTSD, but these project where banned immediately when Big Pharma invented a new generation of antidepressant. And what is a depression anyway?

The brain is just complex but the way you have brought it out, you just changed my perspective and the "effects" of antidepressants. However,do you suggest we let the brain "flow naturally"?

I've always thought that one big cause of depression is the reaction to life/culture/society. Same goes for anxiety.
We are seeing the rise of depression even with all the advances we have in our first world country. Once again I point to our society where we are devoured with celebrity culture, constant negative news stories (which help bring on anxiety), seeing how other people are enjoying or doing better in their lives than you are..
Seeing that day after day for years on end I would imagine has to have some sort of effect on people.
Then on top of that people are just given benzo's or anti-depressants as a way to just dull their problems(if it even works for them) and it never gets them to address the issue of their depression. And if they want to get off most people aren't even told from the start of the dangers and withdrawals that can happen with anti-depressants.
This is just one of the symptoms that I see that can start depression, along with what we eat/exercise and genetics.

Anti-depressants can be prescribed by a general practice doctor with one visit and no psychologist or psychiatrist present. How un-scientific, the whole of medicine is so off course.

Nice video. Thomas Szasz book "The Myth of Mental Illness" was a really eye-opener for me. His attack on the practice of modern psychiatry are just good common sense. The broader dogma of scientism is also largely to blame.
