EXCLUSIVE DTube Video 72: How to make DTube videos work LONGER THAN 7 DAYS!

in dtube •  7 years ago  (edited)

Your Videos on DTube will only work for 7 days, in todays exclusive DTube video I will discuss 2 possible ways to fix this! I actually talked to @heimindanger about this and while I now understand the basics of IPFS, there is still a lot to learn! I don't have all the answers yet, but maybe DTube will help me out and leave me a comment under this video to clarify certain things that I mention in the video :P

Not exactly the solution you were asking for, but maybe sempervideo gets back to this issue along with solutions in the future.

That is very interesting indeed! Thanks for letting me know!

There's also a german version of semperenglish if you like.

Danke!

IPFS identifies files by a hash value that is computed from the contents of the file. I am assuming that if you just host the same video that you uploaded to DTube, it will resolve to the same hash value and you won't need to transfer anything.

You could also just find the hash value of the video and pin it. For example I just pinned the 480p encoding of this video by running the command ipfs pin add QmQGRs9zPKiiy6zyuBw1WvXCCUAyh5Mo4SWqsQgY9KvvUL. Now other people can stream this video from my node as long as I keep it running.

That's awesome, thanks for letting me know!

If you are running IPFS on your computer to self-host videos you can also use the network directly to get content on d.tube with the IPFS Companion addon. It redirects all ipfs.io links to use the network when it detects you are running it.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ipfs-companion/
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ipfs-companion/nibjojkomfdiaoajekhjakgkdhaomnch/

Doing so will also help the videos you watch to stay online, since it stores it temporarily on your computer (you can change the storage setting). Also if you right-click a video on d.tube, it gives you the actual link to the vid (and the hash), in case for some crazy reason the original was lost.

Wow I didn't know that, thanks!

Bitchute is without all this problems but also not yet monetization but the winner will be view.ly that will have it All ;o)

I have legit not heard about these two :O Thanks for letting me know!

I wrote a small commandline tool to make pinning easier. https://github.com/johnn3y/ipfs-pin-steem You can put multiple Dtube URLs and it will create a single hash like this and pin it to your local IPFS node.

This is amazing ty!!

That's awesome, thanks for letting me know!

The problem with hosting with your own hardware is that you need to have an internet connection that allows p2p traffic. Often isp throttle or restrict this kind of traffic, whether it is a legal transmission of files or not. For example, there are no isps in my area that will allow any kind of p2p traffic - it's in their terms of service. For those who want to host, check with your isp first!

Good point!

OMG I didn't know that a videos only works for 7 days! So that's why some older videos I'm trying to watch just don't work? What happens with the videos after 7 days, do they still appear on your channel?

As far as I understand it they basically get erased unless people actually continue to watch the videos

Very good to know my love! xxx

I sure think so :P
