Hey guys! This is my second video analysing the film Spirited Away. In episode one, we considered the opening scene in the car, now we take a look at the slow transition that plays out as Chihiro journeys into the spirit world.
Transitions are a big motif that play out all across the film as we see Chihiro physically transition from one space to another: over rivers, across bridges, through tunnels, gates, archways. The transitions remind us that this whole film maps Chihiro's gradual change as a person. There never is one, concrete moment that changes her from a sulky little girl into a confident woman, just as there never is a single moment for us in our lives; just a collection of small changes happening constantly.
The point then is that we are always constantly changing. I'm not the same person I was last year, last month, even last week. We're in endless interaction with the world, being molded half by it and half by our internal world. What that means is that we never have a clear, fixed, understandable identity because we're always in the middle of transitioning into something else. To try and define who we are, to put ourselves into clear categories, is to limit who we are.
That's just a small, slightly rambling point to add to what's said in the video though. If clicking on it above doesn't play the video, here's the link to click instead.
