A vocal supporter of refugees, George Soros said in September 2016 that his foundation will invest $500 million in companies founded by refugees and migrants, especially those arriving in Europe. Over the years he's made gifts to various organizations that support immigrants and in March gave $3 million to a super PAC that wants to mobilize Hispanic voters. The plight of the refugee is personal: Born in Nazi-occupied Hungary, Soros fled the country and put himself through the London School of Economics working as a railway porter and a waiter before getting his start in finance at a merchant bank. He later moved to New York, worked on Wall Street and established a hedge fund in 1969 with $12 million; it was later rebranded as Quantum Fund. Decades later, Soros remains an investing heavyweight through his family office, Soros Fund Management, with a reported $30 billion in assets under management. For the second time in two years, however, Soros apparently needs to find a new chief investment officer. In August, less than a year after taking on the role, Ted Burdick was reported to be stepping down when a replacement is found.
