Kiss the Queen! My Daughter caught her first swarm of Bees!

in dtube •  7 years ago

Last yr my Daughter and I attended a beekeeping gathering with a bunch of friends from all over the US just to hang out fellowship and to help an older gentleman during swarm season to keep his bees in his boxes. The host told her if she found a swarm and shook it, she could keep the bees.... She accepted that challenge.
As you can see when a bee colony has just swarmed they are very docile because they no longer have a home to defend, the only thing on their mind is finding a new home asap.

It's weird that no one got stung? I always want to try that, beekeeping.

sorry for the delayed response I tried replying last night but esteem kept locking up, It's not unusual at all to not get stung when working with swarms, that's their most docile moment as they have nothing to defend. If you are interested in beekeeping, I always suggest to new folks to find a bee club in their area and take a beginners course, they will also help set you up with a local mentor which I highly recommend as methods/timing is very local. If you can't find a bee club, send me a message and I can point you in the right direction for good online sources that will help.

I've heard people say that bees won't sting who they sense as "royalty." :) Maybe they just sensed they were in very good company.

I like that one!

It feels nice, eh? ^_^

I must not be royalty lol sometimes I get em mad and they have my number for days I step out on the porch to light up a smoke several hundred feet from the hives and not even insight of the hives and within seconds I got bees headbutting me and pinging off my face yet the wife can go outside or the kids can play 30 ft from the hives and the bees could care less lol

Hahaha Well, at least you are surrounded by some special women. Not too shabby, imo!

Great post! Look forward to more from you!

You are smoking! You stink. Sorry couldn't resist. Though It is about smell. Fear, tobacco, perfume.

sometimes I don't even have to light up LOL I just posted a video of one of my meaner colonies i've had, not the meanest her momma was way worse

I use a smoker so little that I have given up on keeping it going. If both generations of this line is bitchy the odds are its only going to get worse.
May be time to get a new queen. Aggression is one of the negative traits of inbreeding. Well next year if you don't have a good spar still on line. I like to keep on or two on hand just in case their is a late season problem. The introduction of chosen genetics can boost your stock.

She was the product of a neighbor getting a TX queen I killed that line

I can see why!!! Had a few over the years . I like the simplicity of your system.

Just love to see the young ones into the bees. Hope for the future.

Thanks for sharing... Love it.

That's really amazing! 0_o

No one got stung? I have seen bees swarm before, but assumed that they would be more, not less, aggressive, because they were relatively without defenses.

Thanks very much for this fascinating glimpse into apiary practices of which I had no clue!

the only time they really get aggressive when they swarm is if they are what we call a " dry swarm" when half the colony leaves to find a new home they fill up their honey stomachs to tide them over for a few days until they can find new diggs and begin buillding comb. But here is the kicker they don't decide where they are going to go until after they leave the old hive. They basically cluster up like what you saw on that branch and vote on the new locations the scouts have found. If they can't come to a consensus or bad weather hits they sometimes get stuck where they cluster and use up all of their honey they are carrying with them. When this happens they can become very aggressive . This is also why they march right into a new home when presented one like you saw here because it only takes a few to go in and they are like hey this works and start fanning to call the others in..... oh and no stings on that one LOL
