Loveline Compendium Vol 42

For those loveline fans during the peak of the show's popularity during the Adam Carolla / Dr. Drew era. These shows came from tape transfers and made into mp3 format. I did not record or transfer any of these shows, so when there's missing audio and the conversation suddenly ends in the middle of something interesting on occasion isn't my fault. Nothing I can do about it, either.

(0:00:00) 01. 1996-01-16: Chad Smith and Dave Navarro from Red Hot Chili Peppers are the guests. Riki starts asking Dave Navarro personal questions about what caused his divorce and pressing him about what happened the night before with Anthony Kiedis even though he obviously didn't want to discuss those things and was having to evade Riki's questions. Also, MTV's Kennedy calls in high on painkillers from her dentist visit earlier and participates in the show for a few minutes. Riki also tries (and kinda succeeds) in embarrassing Adam in front of the band by bringing up his gay aptitude test. Riki has gotten extremely touchy and offended about this topic once or twice before this and he's the one that brought it up. One has to wonder if those things had anything to do with Riki's last show being the next day.

Around the time the band starts doing liners on the air and Riki tells them to stop, Chad says Riki "isn't on KROQ" followed by Riki saying something about "personal stuff", then Navarro saying the show is "all about personal stuff" and ends with Riki calling them dicks and sounding sincere about it. It seems too weird to be coincidence and that something may have happened off the air during this show. If you were paying attention during the show that had the Playboy girls from "Night Calls" on the show, Riki was taking jabs at Dave Navarro even then because his girlfriend was in love with him and wanted to meet him during this show. I have read that Riki said that the girl he was with at the time was not a good situation sometimes. Also, I included a short segment at the end of a call where Adam shares some pearls of wisdom that Jimmy Kimmel gave him.

(1:06:13) 02. 1996-01-17: This is Riki's last show, but it was always thought to be three months later than this date. Riki says in the first few minutes of the show that he will have an announcement to make halfway through the show. When he does, he also mentions the GM of KROQ letting him go on the air to have his last show when most people wouldn't let someone have a last show. He goes on to say he wasn't fired, but that comment about being allowed to have a last show on top of what happened the night before just reeks of a quick firing and then he was allowed to have a proper last show by his boss when he says most wouldn't get a last show. It only makes sense in the context of being fired, so that's what I believe personally because it just makes the most sense that way especially considering the jabs Riki took at Navarro in the preceeding shows and his often cancerous relationship at the time with his girlfriend which was also connected to Dave Navarro.

For what it's worth, Riki for sure got fired from the next job he had due to him beating the shit out of DJ's Conway and Steckler for constant verbal assaults against him on their show. He even briefly went to jail over it. He was dealing with a lot of shit around this time in his life, but he was most certainly a big part of Loveline history. His departure kicked off the most successful 10 years Loveline has ever and probably will ever have. He seems to be in a better place now and I'm glad for that. I've just left this entire show in here. There is some minor radio static at times and some signal bleeding in the background from another radio station, but it's not too bad. Riki went out classy though, so props to him for that and props to him for tormenting Drew with his own drops. It turns out to be a very good show.

(2:42:26) 03. 1996-01-18: With this show, it begins. This is the very first episode with Adam Carolla and Dr Drew and little did anyone know at the time, this duo would last almost 10 years until November 3, 2005. Of course, the show now has a new intro as well. The guys get two callers on the line at the same time to try to resolve their issues on two occasions and some other fun stuff. Full show again. Notice how full of life Adam sounded at this point, but he seemed to slide right into the role without a hitch. Ann declares that women are superior to men which provokes a very simple, wordless reaction from the caller on the line at the time that is hilarious.

(4:18:45) 04. 1996-01-21: Some calls, Drew says "bush" and regrets it and Adam finally gets Drew to crack up laughing while he shares knowledge about how to get more control during future contract negotiations. Also, Adam talks about his dad and his mom's ex-boyfriend Zorbak.
