We only buy Penn reels because they are so easy to work on and you can buy parts for them. It is a good idea to every so often take them apart and clean and oil them, especially if you fish in salt water like we do. Take the spool off and turn the handle, if you see black on the shaft you want to take a rag or paper towel and keep wiping it off while rotating the handle until you see no more black, this stuff can make your reel hard to reel. Then take the screw out of the bail where the line roller is at and clean and oil it so it spins freely. I oil all moving parts. If everything seems to work good, there is no need to take it apart any further. If it is still hard to reel then you should take the screws out of the side plate and clean the gears and oil them. If it is your first time doing this you can take a picture of what it looks like so you know how to put it back together, or go on the internet and look at a schematic of the reel you have. I like to put never seize on the screws before I put it back together. If you fish multiple hook rigs put 3 nails in a board wrap the line around it and you cross your line at the bottom twist it 5 times, take the line off the top nail and run through the loop in your twist and place back on the top nail then take the line off the 2 bottom nails and pull together, before tightening the line all the way tight, wet it then pull tight. You should always wet mono before pulling any knot tight. I have a small piece of wire that I use to put my hooks and beads on with, it just makes it easier on these old eyes. Just put the wire through your loop and run bead and hook through the wire onto the loop. Happy fishing.

It's sad that quality gear is becoming harder to find, and user maintenance is often not a concern in manufacturing. Nice to know some is still around and actively supported!

yes in this throw away world, it is nice to have gear you can get parts for, I have 2 penn reels that I just today got new gears for and will be fixing them the next time the weather is to bad to fish. One of them I paid 2 dollars for at a yard sale, the gears cost less than 20 dollars, if I bought the reel new would have been over 100.
