Understanding midi is one of the first aspects you should learn jumping into electronic music. This 2 part series will teach you everything about midi and control commands.
Have you ever wondered how a artist controls a whole room of synthesizers ?
Midi channels is the key to chaining and controlling a whole room of electronic instruments.
You have 16 midi channels on any instrument that has midi in the specs. Midi channels are like tags, you must have 2 instruments tagged the same midi channel in order to have any chance of interaction between the devices. This video will show how to play the Microkorg from the Novation Impulse.
Beyond the midi channels being selected on both devices, you must connect them via midi wire using the proper midi in and out connection, depending on the setup. I went into midi cables in my previous video, check out the link section if you missed episode #001.
You've got 3 basic midi connections. Midi in, midi out and midi thru. Midi thru will echo anything sent into the midi in with no filter, allowing you to chain various instruments.
The example in this video has the midi out on the Novation Impulse running into the midi in of the Microkorg.
Once you have the midi channels matching on both devices and the proper midi connection via wire, you're good to go. You can chain a whole room together by giving every instrument a different midi channel. Allowing you to create a mad scientist lab of fun in your bedroom.
My second video about midi will jump into advanced functions and control commands.
