DTube Talks | My Personal Message To DTube And Heimindanger | New DTube Curation Update

in dtubetalks •  6 years ago

Whats up DTubers!? Spencer Ryan here again. 👋🏼

So yesterday DTube released a new update regarding their curation policy. And, truthfully most of it looked good. However there is one thing that stuck out as an extremely damaging policy for both content creators as well as the platform itself. And it is this

Lowers the vote strength depending on how many votes the author already received this week

So here is my personal message to @dtube team as well as @heimindanger.

I’m sure a lot of people are happy regarding this, because they feel as if their videos have a chance now. Which is great. I do feel like more people deserve more opportunity to receive DTube upvotes. However… Please do not disrespect my production by placing it in the same category as a low quality video. That’s personal. The only reason I am where I am today is because I realized that I was very far off from some really great producers. Had I been given a million dollar deal back when I was producing terrible content, I would never be where I am today. I had to grow, I had to invest, I had to gain experience. It was good for me.

I believe the amount of effort that went into a video on a subjective level meaning (time, equipment, experience, etc) should be taken into account when deciding upvotes. Not based on how many upvotes a creator has received in the past.

Ultimately good quality is good for the platform. Bad quality is bad for the platform. Ned just got embarrassed on public television when Bloomberg Crypto stated that the sentiment is that Steemit is fairly low quality. So in no way is it a solution to start voting “equality” meaning all votes tend to be equal regardless of time, effort, or quality.

The big giants like Facebook, Instagram, Youtube are all where they are today because of their strict enforcement of promoting quality. If we go the opposite direction, we will never survive as a platform. So my message to @dtube is this. Please, continue to promote good quality. Do not punish those who do more, by giving them less. And ultimately, your voting power is regenerative. Find new creators and give them a chance too. But please, do not promote “bad” videos or punish those who do more.

Some @dtubers are big @dtubers only because of the big @dtube upvotes. If you produce great content, then you should get money from the community as well, not from the platform alone. If you don't get money from the community - well, maybe your content isn't that great then.

I am not refering to a particular person - However if anyone stops making videos because he now earns significantly less, than I wouldn't consider that to be a big loss. If you make good content, the community on here tends to make it attractive enough to stay.

@theaustrianguy I see your point but DTube itself is one of the biggest curators on this platform. Upvotes are almost the only way to monetize here.. How can people like myself who dedicated themselves to this platform, who went full time, who invested thousands of dollars from SBD into equipment, who try to get better every single day on their videos.. How can we now monetize when one of the biggest curators are reducing their votes?

Honestly, please show me the numerous amounts of people in the community who have enough influence to support creators and help them make a living? Most steem power has been delegated to various bots now. It's hard now. You know, we have to make a living too. It's the same problem Youtube is experiencing now. Youtube took away monetization from the little guys. Now they are struggling to find a way to make a living after dedicating their entire career to the platform!

DTube will stay the biggest curator and the upvotes will be big enough to have enough money I suppose - But if you just depend on the upvotes from one source, it is always dangerous. Maybe this can serve as a little wakeup-call for some people to get better in order to receive votes from more people. There are still a lot of manual curators out there who have enough SP ;)

I've been saying this since I started on Dtube back in February if I remember correctly. While I dont depend on this as my full time job I have also invested a ton of my own money into the equipment and software needed to make my videos. I have received maybe 2 Dtube up votes total which weren't very high compared to what they can upvote now. We cant all rely and fight for the Dtube upvote that's just not sustainable. We need to make sure that the best videos made are the ones that rise to the top and it also depends on us. Bid bots are an issue for sure and I dont know how to fix that, maybe someone can come up with an idea but until then its up to us to upvote the good content and the content of quality. I put in alot of work into my videos and some get nothing at all. At the same time we do need to make changes that will allow us to monetize our videos outside of just the up votes. I actually talk about this in the video I posted today.

I agree with you 110%. You aren't wrong. Unfortunately we are at this point where unless we all get a lot of steem power, our votes just won't be as impactful yet. We have to keep working towards it. I also just followed you and looked over your page real quick, loving what I saw so far. Will be diving in more soon!

Agreed! The platform is still so young compared to other platforms. There are growing pains and changes and things may take a while to get to a point where those who make great content at high quality will prevail but until then we just have to do everything we can to make it. That's part of the pains when dealing with a new platform and being early adopters. Just like the early days of YouTube before they started monetizing for creators. Just like Casey Neistat he didn't monetize his first 100 million views. I definitely think instead of a view counter maybe a time watched counter for our channels would be great to help attract potential sponsors and investors. In the mean time I appreciate the follow and your support. I'm a fan of your work too. We both seem to want to make the same types of videos and are inspired by some of the same people. I'm in LA and I know your in NY but if you ever in town hit me up!

I have always felt as if we needed more diversity in upvotes. Unfortunately it just seems as if things have stayed the same.

I was super fortunate to be supported by two whales from early on. I always tried to keep going, to try and get the attention of more and more people. It seemed to plateau there. I was increasing my effort, and my investment of time and money but the results stayed the same.

I just hope that the system fixes itself soon. That fans actually can support creators.

True - Wrote you a message in Discord ;)

well i got upvoted from dtube 1 or 2 times, and i think my videos are decent. certainly know how much effort is invested in them.

Dude brah, thanks for the shout-out!

I am pretty bummed about the changes, and I feel you so hard on all this! Thanks for your honesty!

Of course @bethwheatcraft! I can't express how awesome that video was!

Yeah I know, I guess we just have to see where this goes and adapt. It's still okay for us to voice our opinion. After all, opinions is what sparked this change in the first place! Keep on rockin!

Your shit is legit, and will rise to the top of any curation system Beth.

"Do not punish the people who have supported your platform since day one."

Dtube has been around since way earlier than December 2017. Unless you are talking about @exyle, as far as I know he is the only one that was constantly sharing content here when there were no $100 upvotes.

True, dtube has been around since July 2017. But when we first joined the platform dtube was still a very small platform. Spencer was consistently sharing content without the $100 upvotes, it took dtube a while before seeing his content. I would even like to say Spencer was one of the very first pioneers of vlogging on this platform along with @kevinli, @coruscate and a few others. Definitely a day one if I do say so myself.

Well considering you mentioned December 2017 it appears as if you are taking this personal and believed that I was only speaking for myself. Considering the fact that DTube has supported me very well, in addition to other whales on this platform I can tell you for certain that I was not talking about only myself.

As a matter of fact however, in December 2017 when I first started I remember you were being rewarded quite well yourself. And DTube was not throwing out $100 upvotes. And I made an effort to comment on your videos and support you as well.

My point is that there aren´t many users that can say that they supported Dtube since day one. Dtube went bananas when they got a massive delegation, before that, the only Dtube evangelist was @exyle (as far as I can remember). My point on december 2017 is that then was when Dtube boomed and started getting a lot of users onboard, and for what I could gather talking and reading through a lot of Dtube related channels in Discord, many users actually think that Dtube was born in December 2017. Nothing personal man!

When I said day one it was more or less a generalization for "the early days". If/when dtube hits 5 years in the field, it would be fair to say December 2017 is "day one." I guess I could have said from early days.

That comment I made was really just saying, don't forget the one's who have been supporting your platform from early on which was really spun off from the recent attack on long time Youtubers being ditched for celebrities.

My take-away from all of this is that we need the dtube plaform to be built with less reliance on the "dtube fairy" and for the steemit community to step-up and actively vote for good quality content. This will build a much more sustainable platform.

Having said that, I get that this might be a big ask in the short-term (without dtube itself stepping in as actively) but over the long-term this has to be the way to go to allow others to be discovered and build their presence.

You're doing great stuff here and I for one will make an extra effort to vote more actively for your content (with my own vote, for what it's worth?!) - something that I might not have been as inclined to do in the past when I saw the dtube fairy wade in with its monster vote to pick up the slack for the rest of us...

Yeah man you're right. That would be ideal. A community full of people who have enough steem power to promote good quality content. Unfortunately right now the system is broke. And you're right, it is a big ask in the short-term. Hopefully one that pays off in the long run. Honestly these problems have been here since I started in December. I guess we will have to see what happens!

Thank you for that, I really appreciate the kind words! I am looking forward to seeing your content here!

Hey man are you guys around to chat for a sec?

I will be this afternoon! If that works for you?

Sure you or Paola can send me a message when either of you are avaliable that would be awesome!

I hear ya 100% and I see what you're saying 100%

Now I have a video response to you and @kevinli lol

In the end, @dtube will definitely look out for us. I trust them. And I'm glad you're honest about how you feel. It's a time to be straight up. Always a time to be straight up :) always appreciate your boldness at all times. Didn't realize you spent that much on gear LOL

Haha you and your video responses!

Yeah I mean ultimately DTube has always looked out for us. I just feel like there could be improvements. It's just time to be honest right? This is a censor-free blockchain.. So why censor our feelings about certain things?

Wow man, that was a direct attack at soooooo many video producers like myself who don't have the money or the time or the interest to go as deep as you do. But saying that our content is no quality and doesn't deserve upvotes is outrageous. I am not asking to get as much as you do but it would be nice to get a 10$ upvote once a month or so for the video where I just film myself with my phone. Thanks for showing what you really think about the people that came before you and helped to make the platform what it is. So, I don't complain about how things are but watching you complaining that YOU want more to have less voting power for others is really something!

@flauwy you are absolutely wrong. I did not attack video producers like yourself. I very specifically said that you did not need money, or equipment to create a good video. You did not pay attention at all. I said that a video either needed to be of high quality or of high value. You took it upon yourself to take this personally.

And I always felt like you deserved upvotes because I watched your videos and you provided value. But making excuses like not having money or time or interest is completely on you. If you want to make money on a "Video Hosting" site, then it would be a good idea to improve your "videos."

I guess I opened up Pandora's Box.

The amount of money you throw around here is incorrect, it was a lower number and even that was based on wrong calculations from a third party application. I never receiveed even a fraction of that. But what has that to do with the discussion? How does that help a content creator in India who has only a phone to record and zero money but already one hundred more or less good videos on DTube with 0.00 upvotes?

But anyway, I wish we wouldn't have talked about my personal finances on the public blockchain. I haven't pulled out your earnings either. And it hits me even harder on a day where I realize that I cannot pay my really low bills. You hit the bull's eye with that,

Regarding my own content creation: I have improved my videos by working for three months on a new animated puppet which did cost me a small fortune and is totally unique on Steem. I am happy with what I did there.

DTube is trying to get more votes to more content producers with the limited power they have. That is an honorable goal. You make good videos and good money on DTube and that will most likely not change.

I apologize for the rather rough first comment and I hope that this reply is less confrontational. But as I am following your work from day one Steemit I felt compelled to voice my opinion. I do not wish to fight with you.

I was only going based off of what you told me. Honestly I just wanted to drive the point home that when people say they can't do something because they don't have something, they are ultimately making an excuse. Casey Neistat just made an awesome video on Youtube about someone who overcame all troubles and made no excuses.

What got me is when you said "like myself who don't have the money or the time or the interest to go as deep as you do." I took it personally because you attacked me personally. In the video I made it known that a good video is not defined by the equipment or money you have. It's multiple things. The effort you put in, the value you provide, and even the quality of the video. A Hollywood producer just made an entire film on iPhone. So that's incredible!

There are so many stories of people coming from nothing and achieving everything. But we cannot make excuses or baby people. That was the whole point of the beginning. When I first got into videos 6 years ago I wanted to make amazing videos and a lot of money. Imagine if someone had wrote me a big fat check! I would have never been convinced to get better and to try harder.

I have seen your videos man, that's why you're on my upvote. I've always admired your videos. I like what you do, since the day I came to this platform. And it's unfortunate that you were accused a couple of weeks ago and I encourage you to just keep going honestly.

With all of that said, I refuse to allow people to make excuses for reasons they are not successful. Unfortunately in a real world situation, people who make excuses never succeed. Thus we must push ourselves every day to do better and to be better without excuses. That's what I do and that's why I am where I am today and I'm proud of it!

Thank you for this great reply. I really appreciate that! And it makes me regret my intial rant as I could have worded myself with less emotion. Sorry for getting personal.

You are absolutely right with the effort you have to put in and the excuses you can make in order to not do that. I am in a fortunate position with my SP but I also know that I have worked very hard for it before. Ever since I was attacked here I kind of lost my mojo. That has heavily impacted my Steemit activity and video production - and income. I am in excuses-mode.

You on the other hand, are in power-mode. That is cool for you and great for the platform. But I have been there as you know and it can make you blind or like in my own case even ignorant of the fact how much of the Steem reward pool a power user like yourself is already receiving. For example this week you have an expected payout of 0.0567% of the reward pool according to Steem Supply. That is fantastic and a great achievement. You have earned it as well!

However, that also means that you are currently receiving over a 2000th share of the entire author pool which is shared among 60k - 70k active users. So when you receive less upvotes or smaller upvotes for your work then you would still be one of the top Steemians to receive a large chunk of the reward pool. Right now you riding the wave of being a favorite of the DTube team. That is a massively centralized decision (with the new rules slightly less) which effects all other DTube content creators as well as the entire Steem ecosystem since all platforms share the same reward pool.

My conclusion is that this new system is a first step into a more decentralized and fairer upvote system than it was before - although it is still miles away from that. The massive delegated Steem Power that DTube controls will hopefully spread out wider now which will effect probably all top earners on DTube. But the cool thing is that you can still work in power mode but spread out to DLive for example or find other ways to make more Steem. You can even earn more than now with the same effort but more wider approach among different platforms.

this is a good one

ya olduğun gibi görün, ya göründüğün gibi ol...

Hello mate, I see you are really good making vlogs and editing.

I wonder if you are on discord because I would like to ask you a few things, like for example what camera do you recommend that is no very expensive, and what software to use to be able to make cool intros?

Cheers man.

Let's adapt or die together :)

did i miss the dtube equality train? because i am making equally nothing on dtube, as i was before :D
Question is how many people can make quality videos every day, and what is a quality video. as you are in video making, do you think that you could make a good video every day (not a vlog)?
I just clicked trending on youtube and i can say that from like 50 videos, there are like 2 i would like to watch. trending and hot is not really what is the best, its just what is most reworded. why, maybe they invested more money, maybe they paid for bots, maybe they are here for long time and have more following, or they just make good $ on their posts so they get autovoted because people know they will get something from curation portion.
