I recently read Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert having tried to get myself through the whole 6 books with varying succes.
I like how this book is set a long time after the previous book and how it still manages to connect to that same universe, even though so many things have changed. Pre-existing planets, like Arrakis, and Giedi Prime are there, while allowing them to have changed enormously since the previous novels.
The story follows the Bene Gesserit, a group of female religious leaders, as they attempt to protect humanity from the forces of chaos. The story is set several generations after the events of Dune, and introduces a new cast of characters and political and religious factions. The plot is complex and engaging, and Herbert does an excellent job of exploring themes of power and control, as well as the nature of faith and religion, and revolves around a Ghola of Duncan Idaho, raised by the Bene Gesserit, for a purpose which I believe is not completed by the end of the novel.
The characters are well-developed and their motivations and actions are believable. The writing is also excellent, with Herbert's skill as a storyteller shining through
One of the main characters in Heretics of Dune is Miles Teg, a former member of the Bene Gesserit who has been trained to be a lethal weapon in their fight against the forces of chaos. Miles is a complex character, and his difficult journey throughout the novel is compelling and thought-provoking. He is a great example of Herbert's skill as a writer and his ability to create multi-dimensional characters.
Despite liking Miles Teg, and despite understanding the rest of the story, I find it somewhat unfortunate that there is still such harping upon the Atreides, with 2 main characters being direct descendants of Jessica and Leto. It is the same curse to which Star Wars is starting to fall: In a universe of many, many worlds, with many political factions, over 1000's of years, surely there must be other people besides the same 2-3 families.
I am intrigued how the story will end in the final installment: Chapterhouse Dune
