Earth Week Report from Cameroon
In a bid to #EndPlasticPollution, The Greens launched her Earth Week #EndPlasticPollution Campaign Activities on Saturday 14th April 2018 with a one hour environmental radio program, Green Radio on Abakwa FM 99.0 from 10:00 - 11:00AM during which they assessed the degree of plastic pollution in the city of Bamenda.
#EndPlasticPollution Campaign at Mosque
On Friday 20th April 2018, members of The Greens joined more than 100 Muslims in the Mosque of the Islamic Light Center in Mile 3 Nkwen to pray for Mother Earth as well as sensitize and engage Muslim faithful to #EndPlasticPollution and take action to care for Allah's Creation as in Surah 30:30 of the Quran.
100 Flyers of Earth Day quotes, 200 Flyers about Plastic Pollution and 12 Posters about Plastic pollution were distributed to the Muslim faithful after the preaching during service.
#EndPlasticPollution Campaign at MINEPDED
The #EndPlasticPollution Campaign team then left for the Regional Delegation of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development where the representative of the Regional Delegate officially launched the campaign by putting up the campaign posters and flyers in his office as well as pledging his support for the fight against plastics in the region as he presented over 8 tons of plastic bags that had been removed from the environment.
From the delegation, the team then handed over a Plastic drive bin to Lima Charlotte who installed it in their shop at Up Station in Bamenda.
Green Radio
Saturday 21st April 2014 from 10:00AM – 11:00AM featured another exciting edition of Green Radio on FM 99.0, Abakwa FM Radio.
Our resource persons for Green Radio were Mr. Fomba Etienne from Y'G Inc., an IT Company based in Bamenda and Mr Mansah Joel from HYSACAM - Bamenda, the company managing waste in Bamenda.
Mr. Fombah Etienne talked about the role of ICT in the sensitization and education of people about plastic pollution as well as how ICT can reduce the amount of waste generated in the city of Bamenda.
He said "if we go digital, we will greatly reduce the amount of waste we generate in the city of Bamenda"
He also went further to share their companies experience in going green. He said "Y'G Inc. offers mostly e-services to her clients and does everything possible to avoid printing."
Mr Joel from HYSCAM - Bamenda took time to talk about what HYSACAM - Bamenda is doing to manage waste in the city and called on inhabitants of the city to reduce the amount of waste they generate. He gave simple and practical steps to help end plastic pollution such as taking your shopping bag to the market, refusing to use single-use plastics and a lot more.
Earth Day in Churches
As early as 07:00AM, the #EndPlasticPollution Campaign Team was already ready at The Greens Office. Their goal was to distribute 1000 Flyers about Plastic Pollution, 400 flyers with Earth Day Quotes and 15 Posters about Plastic Pollution in 04 Churches. The #EndPlasticPollution Campaign Team was made up of;
Ngalim Franklin (Mr. Green @dukefranky) is Founder/Executive Director of The Greens (@thegreens)
"From little things, big things grow. It suffices and will create a giant impact if every citizen of the planet can refuse, reduce, reuse, remove and recycle just one plastic. " Mr. Green 2018
Tubuo Laura (@laurakiss) is Public Relations Officer of The Greens
Lima Charlotte is Assistant Director of Projects and Programs of The Greens
Sama Scholastica (@samascholastica) is the Office Assistant of The Greens
St Paul's Catholic Church
The Campaign Team first left for the St Paul’s Catholic Church in Mile 3 Nkwen where they sensitized the Catholic Christians.
Presbyterian Church Ntamulung
Leaving St Paul’s Church at 08:30AM, they joined the Presbyterians at Presbyterian Church Ntamulung to commemorate Earth Day. There, the Pastor preached about the role of Presbyterians in protecting the God’s creation and this was followed by the distribution of flyers to the Christians to remind them their commitment to protect paradise, Earth.
Redeemer Baptist Church
Our campaign team then left for Redeemer Baptist Church in Mile 3 Nkwen, where they were given a very warm reception. During service, the Baptist Pastor took out time to effectively educate the Baptist Christians on the need for them to care for Mother Earth as well as effectively acknowledged and appreciated The Greens’ #EndPlasticPollution Campaign Team for the work they were doing. At the end of the service, the campaign team members were offered apples to revitalize their energy.
The Baha'i Center
Next stop was the Baha’i Center at Ntambessi Junction, Mile 2 Nkwen at 12:00PM. The Baha’i reception was a memorable one as they sang a welcome song to the campaign team members. In a round table discussion with the Baha’is, the Founder/Executive Director of The Greens led a strong talk about Plastic Pollution during which all Baha’is pledged to reduce, reuse, refuse, remove and recycle plastics.
The visit to the Baha’i center marked the end of our #EndPlasticPollution sensitization campaign.
It was a very great day talking and learning from people from diverse religious backgrounds about the role of their church in environmentalism.
More than 2000 Christians listened to our Gospel of plastic pollution and we believe if Christians, Muslims and Baha’is, take the lead, then we will end plastic pollution.
