Experimental Events Proposal

According to a scientific observation known as "The 100th Monkey Theory" a critical mass in consciousness can occur in awareness of a species, mind to mind. I propose to reach this using several technics.

"The Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, had been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years. In 1952, on the Island of Koshima, scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkeys liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but found the dirt unpleasant. An 18 month old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in the salty ocean water, improving the taste of the potato. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates learned this trick and taught their mothers too. This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by numerous monkeys in the troop and observed by the scientists.

Between 1952 and 1958, all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes and make them more palatable. Only the adults who imitated their children learned this cultural improvement. Other adult monkeys kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes. In autumn of 1958, something startling took place. A certain number of Koshima monkeys were already washing their sweet potatoes, the exact number is not known. The hypothetical number given was 99. Then it happened. The hundredth monkey learned to wash the sweet potatoes. The added energy of that hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough. Almost everyone in the tribe was washing their potatoes before eating them, but a surprising occurrence was observed by these scientists. The habit of washing the sweet potato had jumped overseas. Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop at Takaskiyama began washing their sweet potatoes.

Although the exact number may vary, this Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of individuals knows a 'new way', it remains the conscious property of those individuals. However, when one more individual manifests this new awareness, the field is strengthened, a critical mass is reached, and the awareness becomes the conscious property of all. This new awareness is communicated mind to mind."

I have taken this concept and formulated a plan of action. I propose to create experimental music events in major World Cities, with the audience participating in chanting, with us, the Mantra of Compassion. The Mantra of Compassion, OM MANI Padmi Hum, is pronounced by Tibetans: Om Mani Peme Hung. It embodies the compassion and blessing of all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and invokes especially the blessing of Avalokitesvara (Goddess of Mercy), the Buddha of Compassion. Another way of interpreting the mantra is that the syllable OM is the essence of enlightened form: MANI PEME. The four syllables in the middle, represent the speech of enlightenment; and the last syllables, HUM, represents the Mind of enlightenment. The body, speech and mind of all the buddhas and bodhisatvas are inherent in the sound of this mantra. It purifies the obscurations of body, speech and mind, and brings all beings to the state of realization. When it is joined with our own faith and efforts in meditation and recitation, the transformative power of the mantra Arises and develops. It is truly possible to purify ourselves this way.

Demonstration Project
in Washington, D.C.

"4,000 Yogic Flyers from 62 countries creating coherence, improving the quality of life and reducing violent crime.

A 21 percent reduction in the most violent crime categories was reported when over 4,000 people from 62 countries gathered in July of 1993 in Washington, D.C. to practise the Transcendental Meditation and Yogic Flying programs. A final report by a 27-member independent team of scientists and community leaders found that the crime drop was consistent with the predicted causal role of the group of Yogic Flyers.
This study shows the decrease in violent crime rate (orange line) when over 4,000 experts gathered in Washington, D.C., in July, 1993 (shown in highlighted section). Scientists took into account changes in policing, weather patterns and all major factors known to affect crime rates."

I also propose to run different forms of spoken meditation with the audience. A guided meditation is when you are lead by spoken word on a unique journey of the mind with the purpose of achieving healing and realizations through purposeful contemplation and reflection. Guided meditations can have profound effects on people. I believe that these are powerful tools that can be done with very large groups of people.

"San Francisco, USA -- Many studies have been done on the effects of guided meditation and most of these studies have proven its effectiveness on calming a person’s mind and body. Guided meditation is not a new exercise and has been around for many years but since the recent notice of stressful and time consuming jobs and lives, many people have turned to it to help relieve their stress and to instruct them on how to deal with straining situations.

Through the use of guided meditation practices, people who participate in these meditative sessions are finding more calm and quiet moments in their lives, even when they are not meditating... "

These proposed music events should gather quite large crowds. 100,000 - 200,000 people is ideal for the expected results. I propose a research team to be formed to study and gather information about different forms of guided meditations to use at the events, as well as information on the use of lights, sound, mantras, etc...
This team of researchers will work together with another proposed team of analysts that will study and show the effects the events are having on the World Cities and possibly the whole World.
