Day of the Dead - Dia de los Muertos - Oaxaca, Mexico (photo journey)

in earthnation •  7 years ago

Oaxaca Mexico is on my radar with flashing lights and the smell of burning copal. This city is sense grabbing. And at the end of October, the sixth sense is the most active. I have done a decent amount of traveling. Europe, South America, India, and now this southern state of Mexico is slapping me across the face with spice, art, death, and a wee bit of mezcal.

One of the first things people talk about after coming to Oaxaca is the marvelous food. Comida buena. I must join the choir and echo what all my friends have told me. I'll just say this, OMG Its freakin good!

Freshly made salsa with chipolines (grasshoppers).

Many options of Mezcal. Each one is made from a different type of agave plant. Whereas tequila is only made from the blue agave. Like wine, they are named after the type of agave.

Please enjoy the rest of this photo journey and ill see you at the end.

This trip was full of color, spice, and spirits. The city was full of altars honoring ancestors. The streets and doorways were also lines with the marigold flower. It is believed the scent of the marigold can guide the dead spirits to their families altars. The altars are filled with foods and gifts that the dead relatives loved in their life. Day of the Dead is an opportunity for the deceased to come back to this realm and join their families once again. It is also a tradition for families to gather around the graves of their loved ones and tell stories of their lives.

It was an honor to be here as a tourist to witness a tradition that I believe our culture back home is lacking.
