Famine Worst Throughout History, Most Victims in China.
HUNGER is often regarded as the worst natural disaster on earth. The effect is widespread, and the damage caused can last for months or even years. Throughout human history there have been many terrible famines that claimed lives to millions of people. Here are the 10 worst hungers in history.
Starvation in China in 1958-1962 (43 million killed) *
The great famine in China is caused by communist leaders who seek to force change on society. As part of the doctrine of "Leap Forward", one of them is a ban on private land ownership. The communist regime put iron and steel production ahead of agriculture which eventually resulted in millions of agricultural workers being forced out of the fields and shipped to metal-making factories. By the time the "Great Leap Forward" ended in 1962, 43 million people died of starvation.
Famine in China in 1907 (25 million killed)
The case of famine in China in 1907 was a brief event that claimed the lives of up to 25 million people. Eastern China was shaken by a series of bad harvests when massive floods struck 40,000 square miles of fertile agricultural areas and damaged 100% of the crop. This causes food riots to occur every day.
Famine in Chalisa, India in 1783 (11 million killed)
The famine at Chalisa refers to the year in the Samvat Vikram calendar used in Northern India. Occurred in 1783, where the region experienced an extraordinarily dry year, as a shift from the El Nino weather system that did not bring rain. A horrific incident that occurred at that time all the plants and livestock died was dyed by the lack of water and food. Which resulted in a gamble of life with death to reach 11 million people.
Hunger in the Soviet Union, 1932-1933 (10 million killed)
The extent of the famine was not fully known until the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. The main cause is the collectivization policy of Josef Stalin. In collectivization, the plot of land is transformed into a collective farm. So no more private property. Stalin forcibly took public land and ruined farms, crops, and cattle. The destruction of seeds and the forced collectivization of the land caused a mass famine in the Soviet that killed about 10 million people.
Bengal Bengal, India in 1770 (10 million killed)
Hunger in Bengal is horrible because it kills a third of the population. At that time most of the trade was controlled by the British through the East Indies Company. Reports of drought and crop shortages have always been ignored, and companies continue to increase local taxes. Farmers can not grow crops, and food sold is also very expensive. Without a large stock of rice, people are left without food reserves and consequently famine kills 10 million people.
Bengal Bengal 1942-1943 (7 million killed)
This second period of Bengal Hunger was preceded by a storm (a whirlwind). The majority of the food the Bengalis consumed was imported from Burma, but the Japanese stopped it and turned it for World War II. In 1942, Bengal was hit by a typhoon and three tidal waves followed by a massive flood that destroyed 3,200 square miles of farmland. In December 1943, 7 million Bengalis and Burmese refugees died of starvation.
Hunger in Russia in 1921 (5 million killed)
The beginning of the 20th century was a turbulent time for Russia, where they lost millions of USD in World War I and experienced a violent revolution in 1917. Throughout the war, Bolshevik soldiers always forced peasants to surrender food and crops. As a result, many farmers stop planting crops. This resulted in a food crisis and the absence of superior seeds. In 1921, the death toll from hunger in Russia reached 5 million people.
Hunger in North Korea 1994-1998 (3 million killed)
North Korea has suffered a tremendous famine since 1994-1998. This happened because of two things, misguided leadership and massive floods in 1995 that destroyed 1.5 million tons of grain reserves in the isolated country. This condition is exacerbated by the actions of Kim Jong Il who applied the first "Military Policy", which places the military needs on the needs of the general public, including food. For 4 years, an estimated 2.5 million -3 million people died of malnutrition and hunger. As a region under France, Vietnam was under colonial rule when World War II. When Japanese expansion began in Indochina, Vietnam was taken by Japan and eventually collaborated. The focus of agriculture is finally shifting where everything is directed to sufficient food. The Japanese take the entire agricultural area and take most of the crops away. This condition is exacerbated by the drought that caused mass starvation in North Vietnam. The total population died because of hunger reached 2 million people.
Big Hunger in Ireland (1.5 million killed)
As many as 33% of the Irish population depends on potatoes for survival and the onset of disease in 1845 triggered a mass starvation that lasted until 1853. By the end of 1853, the dying population of 1.5 million people, while the other 2 million emigrated. The total population of Ireland shrank by 25% due to hunger.
