We foud this dresser as a bulk pick up item on the side of the road. It was water damaged and needed a little mending. We brought it home and went over the whole thing with denatured alcohol several times to even out the color. I replaced the inside bottom of two drawers and tightened up the joints with some Elmer's wood glue.
After it was pretty even in color, I took some time to do a little light sanding to further even out the existing patina that had colored the wood over the years.
I had gone onto craigslist the week before finding this dresser, and under the FREE section I found 3 gallons of PURE VIRGIN LINSEED OIL as well as a gallon of denatured alcohol that someone just wanted hauled away.
I took the Linseed oil and rubbed, brushed and wiped on several coats over a period of two weeks, allowing the oil to naturally soak into the wood and to dry. I then lightly sanded and reapplied.
Total cost to me in $$? Nothing... we even found the sand paper.
Time spent? About 6 total hours.
Listed on EBAY. SOLD in about 3 weeks to a woman in NEW YORK who made the drive and loaded it into her SUV.
Money earned: $375
I love this post. Good to know that you can take an item someone has tossed and make several hundred dollars off of it with a little hard work! Awesome
