Blue Moon, Super Moon and Total Lunar Eclipse. Three moon events in one night (or shall I say... 3-in-1) :D which NASA dubbed as SUPER BLUE BLOOD MOON. It will appear for the first time after 150 years.
Super Moon
We will witness massive supermoon which will be 14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual. Supermoon occurs when the moon is at it's closest approach to Earth. That's because the moon's orbit is oval-shaped and not a circle.
Blue Moon
The second part of the rare event is the blue moon. It's called the blue moon because it's the second full moon of the month. The first one occured last January 3,2018. Checkout my previous post.
The blue moon will coincide with a total lunar eclipse.
Total Lunar Eclipse
The total lunar eclipse is also called "Blood Moon". It occurs when the earth sits between the sun and the moon. Forcing sunlight to pass through the atmosphere, the atmosphere filters out (scattered away) moat of the colored light and what's left over is the orangey-red light.
Time will vary depending on where you are located.
According in Space.com, The best place to see it will be Western North America, Asia, Australia and elsewhere across the Eastern Hemisphere.
Checkout the Animation of the 2018 January 31 total lunar eclipse on Earthsky.org.
The last time all these three events lined up perfectly was more than 150 years ago so mark your calendar for this once in a blue moon phenomenon! A must for sky watchers!
